So who has read all the books and what are your thoughts about Snape? Personally I don't think he is really evil, but I am having a hard time convincing my boyfriend of that! I don't think he would have been able to fool Dumbledore like that.

I don't really know. I believe he is a happy medium of both.

My thoughts exactly. But I mean it's kind of true. He saved Harry countless times, but killed Dumbledore. He did the right thing when the time came, but was really rude and cruel to Harry, Ron, and Hermione. I don't know exactly what to classify him as, so I chose the middle road.

I think he's mostly rude to Harry, Ron and Hermoine because he hated Harry's father so much, and Harry and his 'gang' remind him of James Potter and his 'gang'. I think he probably feels a little jealous maybe? Because he wasn't all that popular when he was at school, and Harry is famous and popular mostly for something he did as a baby (and because he's a good wizard - which Snape calls luck, so his jealousy shows there)

I haven't read any of the books and only seen one of the Harry Potter movies - took friends' children as a treat - so alas cannot debate this topic very well. The books are here though, as our son read them many years ago, so maybe I should have a bit of a look and then make a better contribution to the discussion. LOL

If I remember rightly...(been a while since I read the book) the other lady Beatrix (sp?) was having a go at him and was questioning his loyalties, so I think he had to prove himself so made the vow.

I think he may have been under the oh I forgot what the spell is called, the one where you can be a puppet for someone, I don't think he's evil, but then he should be able to resist curses, so I'm still on the fence about it.

I dont think he was under the imperius curse either, he's just working both sides :)

The spell you are referring to is the "Imperius curse", however, I don't think Snape was under the imperius curse - there was a look of loathing and disgust on his face when he killed dumbledore, though I am of the opinion that it was disgust and loathing at what he he had to force himself to do, rather than loathing for dumbledore.

I have read all the books more than once and I tend to agree with you. I feel that Dumbledore was in a "sacrifice one for the good of all" mode at this point. I think that snape still has a little wicked in him somewhere...but I feel he was doing what he had to do to maintain his spying on Lord Voldemort.

Well, the problem is with these Books and the movies is too many people take to heart this type of stuff, and quit believing in Reality, and God and such. That is why they are considered evil. I am personally not a Fan of Harry Potter and the books for many reasons, and Yes, I am a Christian also.

yep definitely, always good to keep people guessing. My boyfriend just keeps saying he can't be good if he killed Dumbledore! It's just all part of the plan...not too sure what the plan is...but I'm sure it's a good one lol

I want to believe that Snape is good. I agree that what Hagrid overheard was about Snape having to kill Dumbledore because of making the unbreakable vow. Anyone else notice that his hand twitched just before agreeing to the last element? And he continues his role as a teacher rather than kill harry: close your mind - why not just shut him up, hurt him, if he is not supposed to kill him? He just continues to deflect his curses. I think that there must be some other reason that Dumbledore trusted him, other than what Harry thinks, since there was such enmity between James and him. I'm sure we will find out what that is in book 7. I can't wait!
