I have bought bananas by the case! You can slice them and squeeze lemon juice on them, then freeze them for smoothies! Works better than ice since it does not add too much water to the smoothie the way ice does!

It is not difficult and the bananas still taste good! I just made one with a banana, an apple, a pear, yogurt and frozen blueberries!

Hi olivemai, Thanks for a very helpful bunch of info. I personally think every garden should have half a dozen banana trees to keep the household supplied. The Dwarf Cavendish, in particular, is suited to gardens in temperate climates, because it's frost hardy and bears it's first crop just 9 months after planting. AND the Dwarf Cavendish only grows about 6 feet high - yet still bears full-sized banana bunches. The other really good thing about banana plants is they are so easy to propagate - little shooty thingy's called "pups" sprout around the base of an existing plant, and you just cut these off and plant them to make new banana plants. I'm suspicious that the quarantine and other regulations relating to bananas is designed to protect the established commercial banana industry from competition by domestic gardens. It's actually quite hard to locate any sources of banana plants where I live here in Australia. So it's off to the supermarket to get them when they're cheap in the meantime. Ranges anywhere from 99 cents to $5.00 or more a kilogram, depending on the season.

We are paying more for them this year, like maybe fifty cents each, but it is worth it! One of the best foods you can buy!

I did not expect it to produce fruit! I did see a tree not too far away, and the lady gave me a sample of the banana that grew! It was small and not too sweet, but it was definitely a banana! I thought it was a tropical fruit only!

I have always loved bananas. As a matter of fact, I just ate one before reading this discussion. (My 2 Maltese babies share my love of them so I always have a table for three ready when I get a banana.) I have 3 dwarf banana "trees" growing in my diningroom. I want to plant them outside, but have always been afraid that they would die in the winter. I live in northern Virginia. Do you know if they survive the winters in this zone (6b, I believe, or 7)?

I saw a beautiful sunroom in Delaware! There were bananas growing on their tree! Other fruit too.

Never mind. I just read up on this plant and learned the hardiness zones for it. I seem to be in a zone where the climate is too cold in winter. However, my husband has promised me a sunroom in the near future, so I'll just wait until then. Thanks, anyway. Peace and Love!

Those are good foods to add bananas and get a boost of vitamins! A lot of potassium in bananas and that is what makes most of those foods good for us!

That link didn't work for me, but it is said that rubbing the inside of the skin on your hair before shampooing is therapeutic, and it is supposed to cure psoriasis, too. Dunno about that, but have you seen those adorably cute miniature bananas? I took a photo of some we bought recently at the dollar store. I should go start a discussion about how cute they were. I freeze bananas, preferably dipped in that great coating they sell in the produce section of WalMart--I mix one package of chocolate flavored dip and one package of the peanut butter flavor--or sometimes dip twice, first in the peanut butter and then in the chocolate...more work, but more candy :-)

When I was pregnant, I was always told that eating plenty of bananas would help prevent leg cramps.

Yes, it will, as it is the potassium that helps prevent cramps and the lack of potassium that causes them!
