Pure bred kitten or a cat with character

Some want to get beautiful kittens with official papers and some like a kitten or older cat of...mixed heritage. Do you like pure bred pets? Or do you like going to a shelter a picking out a cat and saving it from being killed? I like going to the pound and picking out an older cat most wouldn't go for - as most would go for kittens. Another reason I go for older kitties is that they are usually already trained - and calmer. How 'bout you - do you have a preference? What are your reasons?

Me and my first Kitty, Babette (1965) - image of me and my first cat, Babette
I've had kitties ever since I was five years old...I'm now 52, and never did I have a purebred cat, but only American Short-Hair Domestics...in other words the "mutts" of the feline world. One cat I did have though, Twinkie, must have had some pureblood in her as she was long haired and had a a slightly flattened face characteristic of an Angora...but she was given to me by a neighbor who couldn't keep her so I took her in as a kitten. There were some kitties that were adopted and saved from shelters..the very first one I had, Babette, Mickey, and Footie--many of the others were ones I "rescued" from the streets Here's a picture of me in 1965 with my first kitty, Babette..now long gone in Rainbow Bridge

Cute picture, you've had so many cats - and they're indoors so I know they lived long, well loved lives!

I did start a discussion about not only Rainbow Bridge, but the idea of creating a book which I call my Rainbow Bridge book... It's here http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1099748.aspx

i prefer pound over pure bred..although you'd be amazed how many pure bred end up at the pound.i adopted a ragdoll from there. the oldest i adopted was a neighbor's 17 yr old. i figured, well,he probably only has a few years left, might as well be good ones.the cat was over my house all the time anyway,so the owner asked me to take him.he lived until one week short of 23 ;) geezer kitty

believe it or not,he continued to go out until he was 20.but going out consisted of two houses down, bugging my cousin (same side of street) he'd sit on her porch and hang out with her til we walked down to get him in the afternoon. i consider myself lucky having him-he had a hard life and still was a loving cat-it was amazing.

I love that story! 23 - was he an indoor cat - I could believe it if he was an indoor cat. I'm glad he found you.

I am so with you on this one. I would so rather go to a shelter and adopt a homeless kitty than go to a pet store and buy one. I dontreally care about the breed of the cat all that Icare about is that it will fit in with our family. We have 3 cats and the 2 older ones were adoptedfrom an dog shelter who had a stray momma come in and have her litter. We adopted the last 2 left and they are very happy lovable kitties. Our third one was droped off at a stable with 3of his brothers and sisters and since I knew the owner of the stable and they knew we had kitties already they asked if we could take in 1 more and we said we would. My cats are more than pets they are part of the family and they are treated as such.

I guess to know my opinion you've read my answers here as in my thread starter I just presented two points of view...not stating my own. :) I'm so glad you consider them a part of your family, that's what they are!!

I think I would some day like a purebred, maybe a Korat because that breed is actually in danger of becoming non-existent. But right now I have 2 mutt cats, one I got from a local pet store that takes in people's kittens and the other from the vet. They are great little kitties. I like kittens cause you get to be with them most of their lives so they are like my kids, my little furbabies.

Aww... your furbabies. I really like that. That's why I also like indoor cats - they live longer so you get to be with them longer. Up to twenty years - some much longer. :)

I'm with you. I go to the shelters, or bring in strays. I'd much rather help a homeless animal than support the industry that continues to create more of them. There are far too many homeless pets, we don't need to continue to add to the problem.

Yes, and each dog bred, takes away, in my eyes, the life of an already homeless dog. I have just had a baby - eighteen months ago, but I feel the same about babies. I want to adopt one day and help the already homeless children who want a forever home. I think if one wants a big family this is an ethical choice. Thanks for contributing - happy mylotting!

I have adopted a 12 year old cat from a shelter who they wanted to put to sleep because she had a cold . Her name is shadow and she is a gray calico cat and is now 19 years old. She is very loving !! Also, I have a few crazy black cats.

We tend to have dogs rather than cats but have also had both, and had no trouble with dogs and cats getting along with each other. I tend to go for the shelter mutt, though often we take in strays, such as the best cat we ever had was a stray found on the side of the road, in the cold of winter. When I was in the process of moving, friends of mine, took in my cat temporarily or it was supposed to be. These particular friends have had cats for years, for ever the one friend's aunt who lived with them over 60 so she had many cats and been around many for her life, fell in love with this stary we had, said he was the best cat ever. He was so spoiled by this woman, and since she just beat cancer, and told me I was NOT getting my cat back I didn't have the heart to take him away from her, he was to spoiled after staying there any way LOL. Same for shelter dogs, I tend to get the ones that have 5 days or less live the ones no any else wants. And they have always been the best dogs, and I have been around people who paid hundreds to get their pure breeds, and one in particular even those who know they have the absolute best dog in the world would tell me how awesome this one stray was that we rescued. I have been told he was smarter than rin tin tin and Lassie combined. He was. LOL but it depends on the animal.

My current kitty showed up on my door step with a mouse. My daughter fell in love and I told my husband as long as she kept hunting she could stay. She let my then 2 year old daughter tote her around all summer without a single protest, so we had her fixed -- and we haven't had a mouse in the house since she moved it! I do like cats - and this one has wormed it's way into the family, but they are different from dogs. While she skulks around the edges of the family (unless we're asleep) the dogs barrel right into the middle. So - I didn't have a problem paying $200 for a pure bred puppy, but I don't think I would ever pay for a cat. Actually at this point I'm not sure I would pay for a dog either... hmmm. I would really have to think about it- I don't worry so much about the typically agressive breeds they can make great family pets if they are treated well, but herding dogs would be a problem for me, and it seems like most the muttlies around here are part aussie shepard.

I prefer getting cats from a shelter, too. My cats are not pure bred, except for Arthur who is a Turkish Angora who couldn't stay where he was because the other cats there were picking on him. Most of my cats were adopted as adults. They are more settled in their purrsonalities and are easier to get to know. Everyone is indoor only, eats only canned human quality food and actually runs the house.
