A Degree in Professional Communication

I am considering changing my degree program to one in Professional Communication to pair with one in Business Finance. I'm curious...does anyone have a degree in this area? If so, what did you do with it? Does it seem like a waste of time or worth it? I have been told that anything relating to communication and writing are really important in just about any field. And, since I don't know for sure what I want to do yet, I thought I should choose something that would be useful no matter which way I went. Any opinions?

Hmmm... not sure about that. You are probably going to need to line up a good internship to get into a good job after you graduate. I have a degree in Organizational Communication; probably similar. It led me into a Human Resources position with a midsized company, but I had to start at the bottom, and pretty soon they were talking about sending me to get a certificate in HR. The key to getting a good position (and good paycheck) sooner than later is specifity not broad application, I believe. However, if you are smart and industrious you can get in with a degree and a good interview and then work your way up the ladder to whatever you want to do. My degree per se didn't help me as much as what I learned from getting that degree. I did learn about communication and was a better communicator and facilitator because of it, which was soon recognized by my employers - fortunately. Maybe a minor in Communication would be better? BTW, I now work with my spouse in financial services.

Thanks so much for the input. You make a great point about choosing something more specific. That is what I originally did...but changed my mind. Now I am in a place where I just don't know what I want to do for sure and I am afraid to pick something too specific in case I don't want stuck with that. Like, if I picked criminal justice, for example. I would be stuck with something in that field and it wouldnt be useful somewhere else. Thanks again. Your insight helps! :)

I don't but it sounds like an interesting combination. You could probably easily find work in a marketing research firm. They would probably love to have someone with a background like that. You could also try TV being a reporter on econmic issues.
