New luxury purchase

I just purchased a new Energy Star window air conditioner at 45% off. It is a luxury item...yet it isn't because I am heat intolerant in a hot upstairs apartment. I can also end up in hospital if I'm not very careful thanks to the meds I take... I can't afford to move as the rent is unusually cheap. * Every one is talking about tightening their belts. I guess I'm feeling a little guilty for buying fancy chittle during these hard times...but a trip to ER is a whole lot more expensive than an air conditioner on sale. * Air conditioners at the thrift stores are nonexistent in my area this time of year, and wouldn't you know it, my old machine chose this time to die. I'm religious about maintenance but it didn't matter... * The poor man's carbon offset scheme aka container garden is also growing apace as well.

I have a yard full of weeds, does that count as carbon offset? I need to by a new window unit as the house ac just can't seem to keep all the rooms cool.

Beats the tree out of me! I don't have a yard so I do what I can (potted plants) and pass the time at the keyboard (MyLot) and earn a few extra pennies at the same time. * You might benefit from getting your house AC tuned up. That means getting the filter cleaned out, getting all your hoses vacuumed out, all the crap removed. Then again, I don't know much about your unit. * My unit doesn't keep all my rooms cool either, I hole up in one, my bedroom, which is a combo bedroom/computer room during the day which is the hot time of the day. If I have to do things in the other rooms, I become a person of vampire hours. * A picture of the unit I purchased. * http://www.amazon.com/Frigidaire-FAA055P7A-Compact-Small-Room-Conditioner/dp/B0009T6ACO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1210997597&sr=8-1

the unit is actually probably a little small for the size of the house since the remodel, but really, the bedrooms are the only rooms that need to be really cool, so those are the ones that we put window units in.

..there well you see, you've balanced it out rather well! And 45% off, that was a happy coincidence! I can't remember where you're at, but an upstairs apartment around here (upper midwest usa) would be pretty uncomfortable in the hot summer months.. I had upstairs bedrooms before.. yikes! We have central air, it was here when we bought the place.. but we do only use it on the hottest days.. and we don't even have related health risks!

Each medication with a heat risk doubles risk when taken with another medication with heat risk. I'm on twenty. Fun.

I don't think you should feel guilty, it is important that you are comfortable and this is a reason we earn money ...for our selves to be happy in our life.if it makes life easier for you then well done, its a good thing.

Unfortionately, I cannot work. I'm on SSD because of an alphabet soup of problems that would have me at the keyboard until next week. Said alphabet causes me to take a laundry list of meds that gives me more side effects than Jimmy Carter has peanuts. Heat Intolerance is but one. It disallows me such fun things as going to summer picnics, (no sun either) or being away from the loo.

Look at it this way, you need it. And, an energy star air conditioner will help save you money on the electric bill if you have to pay it. And, it was on sale so it's not like you spent a lot of money on it either.

I chase the 'Energy Star' label every time I can, except on those appliances that came with this apartment (fridge & oven) as I do pay the electric bill. I have also learned the coolest way for making a home made swamp cooler for when the heat isn't nuclear. Take a fan that has a rotating 'face' and put a bowel of ice cubes under it...save some bucks. Also makes a nice humidifier for the sinuses from hell.
