I'm not a good cook. I tried to cook for my family since I was around 16 or 17 years old. And the result was bad as most of the time, there were lots of wasted food on the dining table!!! So, just kinda curious how you guys manage to cook well for your family or friends. Can teach me how?

Growing up I sat by my moms side while she cooked all the the time. I loved to watch her cook. As I got older she taught me to microwave certain foods to get me started in cooking for myself. And as I got eve nolder she taught me how to cook on the stove simple things like pasta and eggs. Now that I have a family of my own I make shure that IF I dont know how to make something but I want to try it anyway I will make shure that I read the directions. I also watch the food network channel and use the food network website to get recipies.

I left home at age 15 and quickly found that if I didn't learn to cook I was going to be spending a lot of money eating at restaurants. I started with simple things like craft dinner. The I started boiling potatoes and carrots. Then I tried cooking steaks and in no time I had learned enough to keep a live without breaking the bank eating out. Over the years I have learned to just about anything. The biggest hurdle to get over is screwing it up. You are going to make a few messes that you wouldn't feed to a dog but it gets easier as you go. Go to a book store or a recipe site and find a few easy recipes with not a lot of ingredients and start small. I love cooking now and use a lot of onions and spices, we love it.

Hi, WebMann, thanks for your reply here. Wow, I really amazed at your way of learning how to cook and even have the love to cook now. I still dislike to spend time at the kitchen unless there is nice food served and awaits me. Hahaha.. But I'll move out very soon, so, i'll try your suggestion first before I spent too much on eating outside food. Thanks.

My siblings and I started cooking at a really young age. My mom had big recipe boxes with lots of stuff kids could make. I've had a lot of practice over the years and a lot of it is trial and error.

Thanks brimia for your comment here. Actually my mum is very good in cooking. But unfortunately, I didn't inherit such skills from her. I dislike those trials and errors cause it cost money and wasted my time. Sigh.

I didn't really learn to cook until I got married, I knew how to cook some before I got married, enough to get by on. But I've learned by using cookbooks, I really like cookbooks, I only like the ones that have simple recipes in them, not the gourmet stuff. I think I've really gotten better at it, the past five yrs. There is one website thats real helpful, I've used alot of recipes on there. Its www.allrecipes.com The other thing is ask people you know that cook, for tips and recipes and things you can try, it takes practice.

I learned cooking special recipes when my interest in cooking started soaring high. And my curiosity on how certain dishes are done increased.. I started by simply reading Recipes in cooking books! :) And following them through bit by bit, matters a lot --especially for beginners. As the saying goes "Practice makes perfect"-- its very true! so, practice,practice,practice... GOOD LUCK!

Thanks, mommyscribbles for your comment. I tried few times in following the instructions in the cooking books. But until now, I still failed in cooking. I think cooking is just not my talent!

i learn cooking by looking at my mum... she loves to cook and she cooks everyday for all of us when i am still a children... so my mum will ask me to stay in the kitchen with her and watch her cooking... from there, i learn to cook by observing and of course practicing it myself... i will say that practice makes perfect and i am able to increase my cooking skills by practicing... good luck and have a nice day...

Thanks, lingli_78 for your response here. How I wish I'm like you, love to hang out with mum and observe how she cooks. For me, really will hide myself when my parents start cooking. Even though they can cook very well. :P

I have always wanted to learn to cook. I took home ec in eighth grade hoping to learn, but we didn't make much, just brownies and chocolate chip cookies. Even then, I usually got stuck washing dishes.

Hi, Bd200789, I agree with you and have similar experience like you - got stuck washing dishes. I don't like to wash dishes though I'm good at it. So, this also contribute to my bad cooking actually.

Okay first things first...you can read and follow a recipe and it will not necessarily turn out as it should. But I will give you a recipe to try and it is super simple and that is what you want for your first time learning how to cook....I've been cooking in the kitchen since I could reach the counter, or pull up a chair.... 1 package of smoked sausage (cut up into 1/4 links) 5/6 medium size potatoes (peeled and cut into quarters) 1 bag of forzen (or about two cans-eyeball it) green beans 1 large cooking pot (stock pot or saucepan) and butter/maragarine Layer your pot this way: Potatoes, green beans, sausage; place water in until it sits just above the potatoes and some of the green beans. Place about 2 tablespoons of marg in and then place the sausage in on top. Cook this on the stove top until the potatoes are soft (not mushy) so pay attention to the time...I don't I just check them as I do other stuff around the house....it usually is like 30-45 minutes on boil. When it is done it is wonderful and yummy. The sausage adds extra flavor as it cooks with the veggies. You can add onions (sliced up) if you like. Tell me if you try this and it works. Here's a tip for sure....start with one dish meals like this one and you will find the courage to try the other mroe complicated ones later. Happy cooking.
