Cellphones are very useful nowadays, but also very dangerous if you don't know how to use it. Useful in the sense that children can call or sms their parents if something goes wrong. Dangerous if children use it to call to strangers and use it for fun. For me we can show our children the right way to use the cellphone and tell them not to play with it. So what age? For me as long as they know how to call me and they know how to read, they are ready for it. Maybe 8 or 9 years old.

AS a teacher I know many parents give their children cell phones for 'security' reasons. Maturity has a lot to do with whether a minor should be allowed a cell phone or not. I get a real kick out of some of tbese kids walking around chatting on their cell phone unconscious of that is going on around them. They will be in with a small group of friends and chatting on their phones! I am an adult and don't see the need for a cell phone that much! Do you think young people lack the social skills adults have becuase of the internet and cell phones?

I guess the right age is about 15-16. But I wokt at school and even 7-8 aged children have cell phones. And I also noticed that they don't care about them. If they loose it they're sure that parents will buy them new one.

I would say about 10. It means that parents can contact their children, when they are allowed further than right outside the house. Obviously not an expensive phone, just a cheap one for £10, so it doesn't matter as much if they drop it or whatever.

mmm i think if we found them that they are in need of it then irrespective of age we can give them. giving cell phone to children also helps us by monitoring them by calling them every hour or two.

hope that you're really considering to let your children have a cell phone, but, at the right age though, of course. IMO, i think the appropriate age for a child to carry their own cell phone would be around 15. b/c the fact that they are kind of maturing a little bit in their lives. they would know how to handle the cell phones, and be able to call their parents in case of an emergency. younger kids than 15, are not mature enough to handle the phone. there are some 15 year olds that have still yet not reached the maturity level, but, in this case, they don't need the phone. the parent should check to be sure the child is mature enough to use one. even if they are at the age of 15.
