Writer's Books

"On Writing" by Stephen King - King is a master of written language. Even though this isn't his typical horror/sci-fi story, his style throughout this book captivate the reader.

I've read many books on the craft of writing over the years. Some have helped, other's haven't. Which books have helped you the most to write your story/article/or novel? I want to know what books you keep on the "craft of writing" on your bookshelf: the ones you just can't part with. My top five are (not necessarily in this order): 1) "Bird by Bird" by Anne Lamott 2) "On Writing" by Stephen King 3) "Writing Down to the Bones" by Natalie Goldberg 4) "Wild Mind", also by Natalie Goldberg 5) "The Forest for the Trees: an Editor's Advice to Writers" by Betsy Lerner. As a writer if you haven't read any of these, you really should get your hands on a copy. They are an invaluable resource for many writers. So again...what are your top five writing books?

I'll be honest, I've never read a "how to write" book. I think writing tends to be something you have the knack for or don't. Perfecting it is more a matter of grammar and spelling, etc. then it is how to write. I could be wrong though. I'm not exactly a "published author"! LOL
