I don't understand The Prophet

I have read The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran and even though it is not a big volume, I have a hard time getting a handle on it. Is it an allegory? Is it a true story about a real Prophet? If so, which prophet is he talking about?

The only part that i remember is when Almira said "Speak to us of Love" .. and that's it. haha.. :).. But that part quite affected me so I remembered it. It talks about God's love theologically speaking and the trials and sacrifices that bring out the good in lovers. Thanking the Lord for a beautiful day, a day to love the person you love. ^____^

God and Love are two things that is good to think about, if it takes us from ourselves and into something more than just our needs. Cheers!!
