Ball fringe - it is now, officially "Vintage"...at least non-crafters think so!

Just had to laugh.. I saw an ebay ad here on mylot that pop up at the top of the page and it was for "vintage, lilac, pom pom fringe". I just had to look. I mean ball fringe - has been around since the dawn of time. It is in and out of fashion every other decade and goes junky to funky to fashionable along the way. So what is so "vintage" about this? And why was it so high priced? I looked and it was simple purple ball fringe. Nothing "vintage" about it! I forget the price now, but it was higher than I thought it should be for just ball fringe, not to mention purple in color which is not a common usable "I'll buy that as save it as I do alot with purple" reasoning. Isn't if funny how sewing and notion supplies never go "out of season"? I mean, ball fringe...it's been around since dirt was invented, yet here it is high priced and advertised as "vintage". I used to pay 25ยข a yard for the stuff for crafts I did back in the 80's. Have you seen any other notions that have gone funky to junky to fashionable?

LOL...that is funny! I have watched a lot of supplies begin to to go up in price recently from 2 years ago...I call it the Etsy.com-syndrome. All of a sudden there are about 75,000 more crafters that are now selling their creations online at Etsy and now , all of a sudden "vintage" is very much in demand (Etsy has termed vintage supplies/crafts to be at least 20 years old) Until about 3 or 4 months, I would buy jewelry-quality sea glass on Ebay and it was plentiful. I had much to choose from and I would buy it at bargain prices, and drill it and create. Now more than half of the same sea glass sellers are selling the pieces pre-drilled! The prices have gone up and the bargains have disappeared. The Etsy-syndrome! People have been complaining about Ebay, saying the sellers have disappeared, the sellers claiming the buyers have disappeared. I don't think people selling craft supplies see it that way, at least not the sea glass sellers... they're cashing in on the "etsy-syndrome"!

I think alot of people that sell craft supplies don't do the craft, but know the supplies sell good. I stopped selling Ebay 2 years ago cause of all the constant price increase and competition to much for the little guy. I seldom even look at ebay anymore do to the thing about low auction price, high "shipping" price. Gotta wonder if the seller is honest or not if they are "selling" like that. Never heard of Etsy.com - i'll look into it - sounds rather cut-throat!

I wouldn't call it cut-throat, there's quite a few very friendly sellers on the site. It is very competitive, especially in the jewelry and painting catagories. As far as Ebay and the seller gouging the buyers with high shipping costs... I set my total price for what I'm willing to pay for something. If the seller is charging too much for shipping, then most likely I won't even be bidding. Should I buy an item with a $5 shipping fee and the envelope comes in with a $1.37 label on it, I'll be sure to rate them poorly on the shipping fees (to qualify for one of the recent Ebay listing specials, you needed to have ratings abouve 4.5 to qualify...to many bad fee ratings and they don't qualify) I still find lots of great bargains on Ebay...and now I found a FREE cash back system when I win an auction that saves me even more money... so Ebay still works well for me!
