Too big for a stroller?

At what age to you feel that parents should stop using strollers for their children and have them walk instead? My daughter is three and a half and am wondering when I should stop pushing her around in her stroller and make her walk. Please share any advice or opinions you have on the matter. Thanks.

I think it is time when your child either outgrows the stroller or the child is willing to hold a parent/guardian's hand while walking somewhere. My son is taller than most children, so he outgrew even an umbrella stroller when he was about 3. It took a little while to teach him to hold hands when we went somewhere, but he does that well now. Your daughter might still fit in her stroller if she is small for her age, but you could start seeing if she would cooperate and walk with you.

Luckily my daughter doesn't mind holding my hand. I do see kids that always pulling away from their parents as they are trying to hold their hands. That to me is scary, especially when you're walking through a parking lot!

I'd say the age limit would be around 3 or four. I mean as long as you aren't walking a very long distance or anything, which you probably shouldn't be with a child unless at a theme park or something :). My sister's son stopped using his stroller at 2!! he hated it!!! lol

My daughter generally wants to walk, but I bring along the stroller on walks in case she gets tired. Usually she just wants me to carry her, but she's getting too big for that! Thanks for your reply.

We rarely use a stroller for our two year old - only for long distances.

Around age 3 she should be able to hold your hand and walk but a young child as yours should not be made to walk a long distance. You should try a short walk to see how it goes.Once walking without the stroller you now have to watch them constantly so they don't get out of sight or run into the road or get behind a vehicle thats backing up,ect.

I have four children and they were all different ages when they stopped using a pushchair, all my kids let me know when they were ready to come out of it. My daughter is 2 years now and she no longer wants to be in her pushchair she wants to walk everywhere. Yet one of my sons was 3 and a half before he came out of his and even then it was reluctantly and he only did so because he had to go to nursery!!

i think that it is based on the individual child really. for me the indicator is when you can trust the child not to just tear off running and you have to chase after them. for safety reasons more than anything else. God forbid they run into the street before you can grab them. the other issue is for convenience sake. sometimes it is just more convenient to push them than to have to pull them along as you walk and at least they are confined to one spot so it is easier to keep your eye on them. i think 4 is the perfect age and they really need to get exercise and flex those leg muscles too. my son was always bigger than every other kid his age so at 4 he looked ridiculous in a stroller and he was well behaved and i could trust that he would not just take off running. so it is a matter of a couple of things i think.

It's going to differ from child to child. My son turned 2 in February. I don't even remember when the last time was that we used a stroller when my husband and I were both with him. My husband used the stroller in March when he took Elliott to the mall, but that was mainly so he could carry stuff in the stroller I think. My son and I go for walks every day, and I never use the stroller. I started out slowly, though. We would only go around the block, and then I slowly worked my way up. Now he can walk about 3 miles or so without getting too tired.

It depends on the child definitly! My eldest was almost three before she stopped using the pram completley yet her little sister is only just 2 and happily walks everywhere! If youre happy and your daughter is happy then no worries!

I think it all depends on what makes the child and parent happy. I used a stroller with my oldest daughter until she was a little under 2, I believe she was 20months or so. With my youngest I stopped using the stoller at 6months. I dont really care for them. Never really went anywhere, where I "had" to have one. My children are now 3 and 4 and they would rather walk. We have gone on an almost 2 mile walk with my friend and her 2 children and my 2 walked and didnt complain. Then they stayed outside and played for 3 hours. I would have to say I wouldnt really go past 4 years old though.

i stopped using the stoller at age 4, i slowly took it away. we would go out for walks maybe an hour or so and then slowly worked up to a day with out a stoller. i see some parents with their kids maybe 1 or 2 years old and they are draggin their children thinking thier little legs can walk so fast.. i take my time i dont like to force them to walk alot like us adults do.you will know when your ready to stop the stoller it just takes time. good luck

Depends on the size of your child. And where you plan to go with them. At Disney World, I would put a kid in the stroller if they aren't old enough to walk the day alone. I think it all depends on the developement of your child. Others develope quicker than others....so age dependent varies. You do what is best for yourself actually.
