Ok, I eat Jamaican food on the regular basis. I usually get rice and peas, instead of food (which is dumpling, banana, etc..). I have always wondered why they call it rice and peas, when it seems to me that it is rice and beans. The rice seems to be mixed with a bean that is akin to the kidney bean, so why do they call it rice and peas?

Hi jalucia good to know that you eat our food on a regular basis. Rice and Peas is what it is. Beans are much broader, while peas are smaller. Most person mix up the red peas with the kidney beans but they have two different taste. Next time you eat our rice and peas look at the difference between it and the bean. I hope I was able to help you. Continue to enjoy our Jamaican food. Try out the Run Down, Ackee and Saltfish, curry goat along with others.

So, this is actually a pea? I thought it was just some version of a kidney bean. This is a shame because I have been eating Jamaican food for so long and never thought it was an actual red pea. I will definitely continue to eat it!! What is Run Down, though? I have never really gotten he chance to try the ackee and saltfish. But, Jerk Pork is my favorite. And, I don't mind me some snapper. Also, love the steamed veggies with my meal. MmmM
