Getting the Needle Again

Ok I really have to go to sleep in a minute but I wanted to make sure I posted this tonight in case I don't get a chance in the morning. Some of my friends will remember that I had a therapeutic lumbar epidural a few months ago and then a course of acupuncture, well I meant to give you an update and forgot! Sorry but I am remembering now....... Ok although the acupuncture helped to relax me a little it didn't help the pain so it has been stopped a few weeks ago. They decided that since the first epidural gave me a couple of days almost totally pain free and it was almost 2 weeks before the pain returned to its normal lever that it may last longer the second time around so I am having the second one tomorrow! Please send positive energies in this direction - I could do with some days without the constant pain - I think I would be able to fly if I didn't have this pain to put up with! lol Anyway last time I went into hospital for the epidural I thought I would be in and out in an hour or two and didn't need to take anything with me - WRONG on both counts! I was there until about 9pm and that was with me pushing at the nurses to get to go home , and 2 I needed to walk to the theatre from the ward and I hadn't known that I should take slippers and a dressing gown! This time I am entering the hospital knowing I will not be home before 8pm, I have my dressing gown and slippers , will be armed with a new book and most of all make sure I have something with me to drink and eat as last time I was ravenous and the nurses were too busy to get me more than a curled up sandwich! Have you ever been as unprepared as I was ? Did you learn your lesson and remember all the things that you forgot about the last time? I won't be here much tomorrow as I will be in hospital with legs I cannot move for most of the day! lol Oh and I want to say a huge Thank You to weemam who is not only a wonderful friend and adopted Grandmother to my kids but she is simply one of the nicest people I have ever met - oh yeah and she is silly enough to babysit my kids tomorrow night! lol Thank you weemam! xxx

Oh honey I know you are in a lot of pain - have you been referred to a pain management clinic? Well pain free didn't happen today - I didn't numb up properly and although there has been a lessening of the normal pain it doesn't seem to have been as effective this time - never mind they are already talking about the next one! lol Hugs xxx Oh and yes weemam is a star and so is her son Ross! xxxx

Sorry they didn't help you! The anaesthetists who run our pain clinic seem to be very good at what they do and I am hoping they can help - we shall see! Yep they are making a fuss of me and to be fair they usually do! Weemam got a shock as Niamh let a screech out when she saw us draw up in the car! lol xxx

A therapeutic lumbar epidural, I think that's what my son-in-law had a few weeks ago and what my doctor has talked about sending me for. Do you get totally numbed from the waist down for awhile with that, like what I had in childbirth? I'm also to the point where I'll do anything for the back pain I have, the pain pills barely touch it and I haven't had a good night's sleep in years. I know I'll be looking at surgery eventually, I used to say "never" but since I've also always said "Never say never" I guess I can be excused for that. I can sympathize with you having pain all the time and I wish you luck. Annie

Yep you are numb from the waist down after and epidural and it is the same sort of thing you would have during labour! I am home hours earlier than last time as I didn't numb up properly and although it has helped the pain a bit doesn't seem to have been as successful as the last one - they are already talking about me needing another soon! As for the back surgery well I had no real choice and was unfortunate to be amongst the small percentage for whom it doesn't work but I still would say it is worth taking the chance of getting better! If they thought there was a chance more surgery would work for me i would definitely go for it! I feel for you being in this type of pain as I cannot do much of anything - not even sitting in a normal chair or walking any distance! xxxx

Hello Darling By now this is done and you are ready to fly for a day or two. People that have no pain have no idea what it means to get even a seconds relief! Or what a person will put themself through to get that little reprieve! Honey I hope this one works even better then the last and no matter enjoy the painfree time you get and make the best of it...I love you Sweets xooxxoxoxoxo

Oh Mom I know you understand completely! It has lessened the pain but not as effectively as the last so no flying for me tonight! lol I am grateful for the relief though as you say I would do anything to get that for a little while! I felt very special in the operating theatre today as I had 3 doctors - 2 of them very senior and lots of lovely nurses! I told them I felt special and they said that was because I am - how sweet is that! love you Mom xxxx

LOL Well I do feel less pain at the moment but I didn't get numb so they don't think it has been as successful as last time - never mind it will work better next time! Oh I wish I could find a way of letting weemam know how much I appreciate and love her! I joined in those 3 cheers very loudly! xxxx

How did you know that I actually tried to sneak out and go home, but as though a certain Someone could see me rang me while I was outside and told me I better stay there and let them sort me out as I had suffered enough of the Pain, I was so gobsmacked I forgot to speak to him, and he asked me what I had planned I just stuttered nothing at all, he told me he did not believe me, so I ended up staying or I would have been in serious trouble, mind you I do not know how far I would have got with the pain I was in xxxxxxx

I'm sending you all the positive thoughts and best wishes possible as you go through this next treatment. I'm glad to hear you were able to get some relief from it last time! I have several friends with severe back problems. Talking to and knowing them, I can see how disruptive trying to live with constant pain can be. Sounds like you've done a good job prepping yourself this time for the long haul where you'll be immobilized in the bed. Take care today, and we'll see you back here soon! *hugs*

I'm so glad to hear that you're willing and open to try different things as treatments. I think it's so important to stay open minded to alternative options available that may be beneficial in giving relief if not 'curing' whatever ails us. And just as great, I love to hear when people are able to keep an upbeat attitude even in the face of pain and adversity. I totally believe that humor can really help us through the rough times. One of my friends who also has severe back pain problems feels the same way and it's amazing to see how well he's able to manage day to day because of his humor and good attitude. You seem like a wonderful person with a great outlook on life and the stuff that comes along with. I wish you the best with everything! *bigger hugs than before*

Thank you so much mamakat! I have been thinking for the last 2 years that I am going to get completely better but I know now I have to be proactive and make sure I try every treatment I can! Yep it definitely disrupts life - I am desperate to get back to work and be more active with my kids but it is not to be for the moment. Got to keep a sense of humour though and realise there are many people out there a lot worse off than I am! xxxx

Awww mamakat thank you for saying such lovely things - you have really touched me! I guess the sense of humour really keeps you going - I would be lost without it! Don't get me wrong there are times when I can't laugh or see the fun but I try to get past them quickly! I hope to get to know you better here and I am sure that we are going to be friends! At least I hope so! Hugs straight back at you honey! xxx

They are already talking about doing it again so we will have to see what happens next! I know I am very lucky to have wee here beside me and so lovely that she will help in so many ways! xxxxx

I am sorry for being late, mummymo, I often miss something when I shouldn't have. I am sorry that things weren't going well for you. I know that you have shared how it went today, and though it doesn't sound as great as you have earlier experience but it is still good that you are feeling less pain. I would wish that your pain goes away completely. I'll pray. And, your friend, weemam, seems to be a great person herself. Very nice of her. Good wises for you both!

Oh sweetheart do they know why you are having so many severe migraines! My son and I both suffer from these and when Niall was getting a lot of severe ones it turned out he needed glasses - now he is back to just getting them occasionally! Hugs to make your head better! As for my day at the hospital it was very nice - I had 3 doctors and loads of lovely nurses in the operating theatre- I felt special and the senior doctor said that was because I am - how nice was that? It didn't work as well but you cannot tell that until it has started settling in - no numbness so it didn't reach the right area - it is hard to get it 100% right every time so we will just have to wait and see what happens! I did get out more than 3 hours quicker though - cause of the lack of numbness! xxx

T%hank you Terry! I got home a lot earlier than expected - partly because I did not go numb this time - although it has helped the pain a bit so it wasn't a complete waste of time , anything that reduces the pain is worthwhile, right? I hope you are feeling better today and know I am praying for a full and fast recovery for you! xxx
