How does Simpsons compare to the Family Guy?

I've seen episodes of the Simpsons and Family Guy. And, they are complete opposites. I used to think that Simpsons was cutting edge and controversial, until I saw Family Guy. Now, I realize that Simpsons is definitely the more benign show. It's just plain funny. But, Family Guy cartoon is rude, loud, gross, completely inappropriate (hysterically funny, sometimes) and only meant for adults.
Family Guy is not a cartoon meant for little kids and deals with lots of adult type situations and themes. Simpsons does not. It's still funny. But, in comparison to Family Guy, it's way more tame. What do you think? How would you compare Simpsons to Family Guy? Which cartoon show do you like better?

Yeah! Simpsons are totally funny. And rarely use profanity. I've got a kid in my house, so we rarely have the Family Guy on when shes up. I don't want her picking up those words from TV. Thanks for dropping by.
