Did you get yours? I think it is silly that if you are military and marry a person from another country you do not qualify for the tax rebate since your new spouse does not have a valid SSN. also the legal immigrants that pay taxes and have filed do not qualify. WHY? they are paying taxes to the US Govt. I think it is nice and everything however i do not see it helping unless they plan on doing another one in about a month to equal out the year. I hope everyone also knows that you have to pay taxes on the rebate amount next year...

I got mine last Monday and since my daughter was graduating, I took care of some things and such. Wish I had kept some. I was also told that I wouldn't have to pay it back according to the IRS, but ok such is life.

paying it back and paying taxes on it are two different things, yes NO ONE has to pay the money back however you do have to pay taxes on it at the end of the year... Congrats on your daughter GRADUATING!!!!

ok let me update everyone on some things, I just got into my office and I have several memos on the checks. 1) The IRS will not tax it this time around however you do have to give the information on your tax return in case you did not really qualify for the 2007 rebate check and it will give you a chance to prove that you do qualify for it in 2008. 2) it is a one time credit however you get two shots at it so keep the letter you get from the IRS for your records. Ok I am glad I went into the office today! See it is good I can read..lol also I like to keep everything clear..

Rainyl, I thank you for letting me know about this because I still have the letter they sent me and I sure want to be sure about this as well. I have kept both letters as a matter of fact and will give a copy to my tax preparer as well so I won't be looking and creeping for one once January comes along. I appreciate the info and thanks again. Thanks again for the kind wishes on my daughter's recent graduation as well. Peace.

I don't think I knew that we had to pay taxes on it-- that stinks! I have to split with my ex-hubby we filed taxes together last year so the check will come together for us this year. I have no idea how we are going to file taxes on that being seperated. It's going to be a mess! Mine will probably all go to bills anyway..

well just make sure you have a copy of the divorce paperwork and also a copy of the check and how you two divided it so you both pay your fair share at the end of thisyear. Look out for yourself and make sure you do not give in to any requests that you pay all of the taxes on the rebate check.. SMILE and hold your head up!!!!!

That's a good point-- I wasnt sure if the IRS would accept that as proof or not. I also am a SAHM, so I have no idea how this is all going to pan out--- I guess I'll owe them back? that stinks!

just like the one in 2000, at the end of the year you are asked if you have received one and if so you will pay the taxes on it as you do your taxes for the year... Nothing is TAX FREE... you can read more on the IRS.gov website.
