Can cats and dogs ever get along peacefully in your house?

We've been thinking about adding a small dog to our little menagerie of animals. We have three cats so far. So, maybe that's more of a collection or exhibit.
But, my spouse is convinced that our big cat (Big Man) would be too intimidated and attack a small dog constantly. I keep trying to tell him that I think a little dog could defend himself. My cat is no dummy. If he got beat up by a dog, he wouldn't go back for seconds. But, I know our kitten would delight in jumping on the dog. And, that might spell trouble.
Anyway, we are at a stale mate. So, we're not getting the dog until my spouse sees logic and is convinced that dogs and cats can truly be soul mates, if only in spirit. Do your dogs and cats get along in your house? Or, do you have to keep them seperated?

I have 2 cats and 2 dogs,it took my older cat a while to get adjusted to the dogs and the kitten in the house. the older cat never messes with the dogs nor the dogs her,but she does play alot with the kitten. It is almost liek she is the momma lol,and she has more energy now as well they have great fun together.

Actually yes. We had a dog named Pops and several cats who happened to have no names. Too bad we didn't think of naming them. Anyway, the eldest of this cats was a beautiful black and white spotted cat with a pointed nose. Whenever Pops finished her food first and this mother of all cats had still some crumbs in her bowl, Pops would join her and they would eat together quietly. However, their intimacy is short-lived. As soon as they finished eating they would start to hate each other again.

We do not have dogs and cats but my MIL does. She has 2 dogs, 1 cat. The dogs don’t bother the cat at all, probably cause the cat can beat them both up.
