How do I care for my hanging potted plants?

I've been thinking about getting a few hanging potted plants this summer. They're really pretty and much more convenient than digging in the garden dirt. But, I have no idea how to take care of them.
For the most part, you just hang them up and water a few times a week. That's all I know about hanging plants. I don't even know if they require fertilizer or bug repellant.
I haven't decided what types of plants I would want to get. I don't know where to get started. Any tips or suggestions on container gardening would be very much appreciated.

I think it is more important to fertilize hanging pots more and I think you have to water them more frequently as well, they can be beautiful on a veranda or sun room even, I love them but I must admit I am not good at looking after plants, I forget to water them but i do have a few plants inside these days and I am getting better.

I'm going to try my hand at container gardening this year, maybe some spices.
