When I was in school pretty much all of our field trips had an educational value. We went to a museum, the zoo, things like that. Rarely did we go to the ice skating ring, although we went hiking a lot when we were in elementary school. Now I see kids take field trips to the mall! Do you think that such trips should be allowed? What kind of field trips did you have in school?

Hi there. I think the field trips to the mall could be one way of educating the childen too. It actually depends on the objective of the trip to the mall. The mall could be one good place for a lot of things to learn from. If the teacher finds it useful to let the kids know the value of "wise" spending, or on what to do if you tail away from your parents, etc, then the mall could be one good place to bring them---as this is probably where most parents bring them to on errands or on weekeends ( i do this to some times--hehe). During my own field trip times?? as there were no malls yet, we went to the local zoo, the airport (yes i think it was a military airport !) I didnt forget the ride on a non-moving military jetplane. Up to now the memory of that field trip still lives on--i was awed by the huge propellers and the chairs they used). What i learned from it? oh well, i guess i wasnt listenning closely to my teacher--my imagination was on the loose at that time with the plane flying high. Hahaha.it was like so very looong ago already.. whew. :)))

Unfortunately it seems the kids are simply 'dropped off' at the mall and are pretty much left to their own. There is not much educating going on. It's more for entertainment purposes. Thanks for your input.

As the previous poster wrote, the mall trip had the potential to be a good learning too. The ins and outs of smart shopping would be a good subject to be taught in school. So many people have no idea how to shop wisely. This mall field trip sounds like it was a someone's idea of how to get some kid-free time. The only field trip I remember taking in school was to the salt mine in a neighbouing town. I don't remember much of what I saw there or what I learned about salt mining. I think the only reason I remember this trip is because I get car sick (unless I'm driving). I tend to avoid repeating any trip/experience that where car sickness was involved.
