Down Syndrome?

I was just curious - do you think people with down syndrome are capable of graduating college and living a fairly normal life if people just took extra time with them to teach them these things? How severely does it affect their brain? I am truly curious about human development, and am wondering if the only reason they sometimes cannot act as normal people do is because people view them as special and being unable to. I realize there are very severe cases in which they are physically and mentally incapable of ever doing anything for themselves, however what about mild to moderate cases of down syndrome?

I happen to work with some Down Syndrome people as I am a Residential Manager in a group home. I believe most down sydrome individuals would do wonderful in the field of music. Most seem to love music. Would they be able to get thier bachelors in science I dont believe so, although thier may be cases it has happened it is unlikely. There are plenty of people with down syndrome that can do daily activities and be successful including living on thier own. Most people with down syndrome is in the moderate phase by the time they hit thier teen years. Down syndrome individuals are also more apt to have alzheimers at an early age, reports as the begining stages hitting as early as 40 years old. It is wonderful that you ask this question most do not understand down syndrome. I happen to have an older gentleman that is 68 years old with downs. He can count and spell his name. His sister was an english teacher and was never able to teach him any more than this. I also knew another down syndrome child that could not say his alphabet forward but he did it backwards. They see things differently than we do, and thier minds take in things differently as well. Now if we could think like they do well then they could go to college because we could reverse it for them to understand. So to answer your question it isnt always because people view them as being special. Down Syndrome individuals are amazing they give unconditional love and most are wonderful dancers, with a love of music. With my individual I work very closely with I have always said he was just a genius and never knew how to express that. Certain things that he displays, being able to take things apart and put them back together. It amazes me. I also believe you should always and keep on challenges thier minds because they will suprise you. Many function on thier own just fine, the thing we have to worry about is other people taking advantage of them because by nature they are very trusting soles.
