How can they do that?

I'm really pissed off and upset now. Yesterday I took this little puppy to a non-kill shelter thinking Ok, it'll have a chance here. because i can not keep her. so I called them today to check up on the puppy because I just didn't feel right about it and I was right in feeling that way. They told me after I dropped the dog off that they called "animal care and control" because they don't accept pittbulls. WELL THEY DIDN'T TELL ME THAT WHEN I LEFT THE DOG! THEY TOOK HER! HAD I KNOW THAT I WOULDN'T OF LEFT THE DOG! i would of brought her back home. So now the dog is at animal care and control where it will be put down if its not adopted out. I'm so freaking pissed off about this.. I Don't want that dog put down. I would of kept her till I could find her a home. They are telling me now that if i want the dog back that i will have to PAY for her. my mom is waiting for a call back from her friend who has some power at animal care and control to see if maybe we can get the fees waved or at least lowered. That's not right! they should of told us this yesterday they shouldn't of took the dog if all they were gonna do was call animal care and control. UGH! i wanna freaking hit that lady. this really sucks though because I don't have the money to buy the dog to then just give it to someone for free, ya know? So I was thinking maybe i could go around the neighborhood and see if i couldn't get some donations to get the puppy out.. explain to people about story and a lot of people already know the story about the dog. I'm so sad about this. I don't get how they could do that. it's not right. these people are suppose to HELP animals.. all they care about is MONEY!

How disgusting! Why didn't she tell you that up front when you dropped the pup off?! I would make a complaint to the sponsor of that shelter, write the newspaper, call the news stations! I hope you get the poor thing back. Don't you have a pit bull rescue organization where you live? Check these people out: http://www.pbrc.net/ they'll probably be able to help, especially when they hear her story.

I don't know why and we did complain. to more then one person. I'm very upset. I was told because shes already in the system that there is no way to get her back in less I adopt her. and I can't even adopt her in less she passes her heart worm test and if she doesn't pass it they will put her down. and I can't just adopt her to give her to someone else because she'll be under my info and because shes is a pittbull in order to adopt her you'd have to have your house checked out? i don't know why and if you have any other animals they have to be checked out and be up-to-date on everything. so i can't get her back to find her a home. but I was told by my moms friend who works at the animal care and control that should put her if she passes her heart worm test on the pup pals list which will help her stand a better chance and i think they keep them for 3-4 months instead of a week. but i don't know.. i'm just not gonna be happy till i know she has a good home. and thanks for that link. I check it out and see if they can help me in anyway as well. maybe they can team up or get the dog? i don't know but the more help the better chance this girl has at getting a home.

I got Gus from the Boston Terrier rescue and their members regularly check dog pounds for the breed and get them out then find them homes. In fact, the shelter will call the rescue if they get the breed that the organization is trying to save. I hope that they can help you!

I am so sorry that this has happened... It would have been good to tell you... Wondering if the person who dealt with you perhaps did not know the rules and took the dog in error. That would be a training issue for sure. I am hoping that your connection at animal control will assist you in waving the fees. It sounds like the first place you took your dog to needs to be told to post something in writing so that people with pittbulls and other like dogs will not leave them there. I know that pittbulls are not trusted much these days and are hard to adopt because some have killed people. I though also know that some are gentle... I am wondering how yours is... Would yours have been gentle or aggressive while she was there? I am hoping that all works out for the dog and for you too. Sorry that this happened.

I am hoping that you get her back... or that the rescue people can find her a good home... I am glad someone else was able to provide you with the weblink for that group.

That's really not right, they should have told you they don't accept pit bulls. Now, I can understand maybe not taking adult ones; they do have a tendency to be aggressive but a lot of that is also in the way they are raised. A pit puppy still can be trained and socialized so he's not dangerous. But still, they should have told you of their policy. Pits have an undeserved bad rep for the most part since so many people have used them for fighting. Any dog can turn mean if you train it to be that way. I think you may as well try to get the neighbors to help, you can't lose anything by asking, anyway.

Doesn't make sense, does it? If it would save a dog's life why not bend the rules a little. Pit bulls are only dangerous it they are taught to be. Or at least that has been my experience. Someone dropped a pit bull here..beautiful, loving dog. They told us at the shelter (we called to see if anyone reported one missing) that the next town had issued an ordinance against owing a pit bull inside city limits so some people had been dropping them off in the country. My husband check with one of his clients (a dog groomer) to see if they knew anyone who would want a pit bull. They did and she had a home in a few days. I wish they would look at each case on an individual basis. Not all pits are bad dogs.

I know! i hate how so many think pittbulls are bad dogs. They aren't! theres a lot of people around me that have pitts and they are so sweet! my uncles and brother have always owned pure pitts and my mom dog is a pitt mix and they are so sweet and loving! you go to the dog parks here and you'll see labs fighting before you do the pittbulls but yet.. pits are soooo dangerous. i wish more people could see how sweet and loving they were.. and this little girl was SO loving.. she was all up on me giving me kisses and stuff.. i know she'll make a GREAT loving dog if shes just given the chance.

I agree! They are such loyal dogs. Not all pit bulls are the same, some of the sweetest gentlest dogs I have been around have been pit bulls. The owner certainly bares responsibility for how the dog is raised. If a dog is trained to be an attack dog, or to be vicious it will be. If a dog is neglected and abused it will be unpredictable and a wild card. If a dog is raised with care and attention and TRAINED in a proper manner it will be a sweet loyal dog. If you can't care for a pet properly. If you don't want to take the time to train one. You shouldn't own one.

Unfortunately most animal control is this way. And the non-kill shelters are tricky, some have major red tape that you have to jump through, and the main reason that they did not tell you that they were going to give to dog to animal control is because they knew that you probably wouldn't have left the puppy. It is a sad state of affairs how the animal control works all the way across the country.

OMG - that is awful, they should have told you this before they let you take the dog there! It is unacceptable! I really hope you manage to get her out of animal control soon! xxoo

I can't get her out but she will be put in pup pals if she passes her heart worm test. I think she'll be shown on tv and kept for 3-4months and i'm gonna contact this pit bull rescue organization and see if they can help any as well.

That is terrible. They should have told you thier policy on pitts. Console yourself with the fact that you tried to do the right thing but policies got in the way. It sucks I know and not much help.

Very sorry to hear that you were cheated in this way. They surely should have told you especially since its clear that you went to them coz you wanted the dog to be well cared for and surely not put down!

Not to be rude, but I think you are the one in the wrong. You choose to take the dog to a shelter "because I can not keep her" once you leave the animal behind that animal is no longer your concern. The shelter did what they are suppose to do, accept unwanted animals. Also, I am sure that if you checked into it the shelter is a not for profit organization. Shelters have to charge a fee for pets that are in their care. Since each animal is seen by a vet, treated if necessary, then fed until adopted. That is what the fee covers, not someone making money. Next time be sure that you can care for the animal for its lifetime before adopting or purchasing.

Um.. I didn't adopt the dog. The dog was NEVER mine. She was an abused dog in the neighborhood and I saved her from her owners and took her there because I couldn't keep her. I already have a dog and that is why. I can't afford two dogs or i would of kept her. They are in the wrong. If they do not accept a certain breed like pitbulls then they shouldn't of accepted the dog, to only go and call the place I DIDN'T want her to go too and have her picked up by them. i could of called animal care and control myself! and they would of came out to my house but I didn't want her to go to animal care and control. that is why drove out to the first place "peggy adams" they are a non-kill and animal care and control kills them. So they are in the wrong. by sending the dog to animal care and control they might just cost her, her life and if they would of told me when i dropped her off that they didn't take that breed. I would kept the dog myself and found her a home somehow but they didn't say that. They took her. then sent her to a killing shelter.

That's not right what that shelter did. They should of told you upfront what they were going to do with the pup after you left her there in their care. That pisses me off to no end. I watched your video and all I saw was 2 dogs playing nice together. Not even a growl out of either one of them. Someone started this pup off on the right path being she's not mean at all. I do hope you can find a way to rescue her b4 she is put down. She doesn't deserve that.

I agree that it isn't fair that they took the dog without telling you about their policy about the breed. Just curious, did you find the dog or something? By the way, if you do get him back out I urge you not to give it away for free (unless you know the person) because there are people out there who take "free to a good home" animals and sell them for research... But I digress. It is difficult for me to address your personal issue, not because I do not feel empathy for you, but because there are just so many dogs out there, it is just another one my heart is breaking for. Good luck.

The dog belonged to my neighbor but they didn't take care of the dog and their kids would beat it for no reason. She got out daily and would just wander the neighborhood looking for someone to give her water and food and I always would end up with her. I can't get her back but i'm gonna do my best to make sure she still gets home.

Post their contact info. I will be more than happy to write and file a complaint on your behalf and all of us who are just as outraged as you. That is so freaking despicable. It is completely mis-leading to say you are a non-kill shelter, when what you do is outsource the murder of the animal. Oh boy, I am all heated now. Give them a piece of your mind, and post their contact info so we can too!

http://www.hspb.org there you go me and my mom did yesterday over the phone and when i asked how come i wasn't told that they didn't take pitts that didn't give me an answer and when I told them i got my dog from there last year and he is a pit mix. They said "well, we are under new management and no long take pittbulls in"
