Throughout the Cold War, the American Left insisted that the Soviet Union was no threat to the United States. They said that it was US aggression, not that of the Soviets that perpetuated the Cold War.
Jimmy Carter negotiated the SALT treaties, allowing the Soviet Union to have more nuclear weapons that we would have, reasoning that they were no threat to us anyway.
When Ronald Reagan called the Soviet Union "the Evil Empire", the left gasped in horror. They thought that such bear baiting would heat up the cold war.
Obama: "Iran, Cuba, Venezuela - these countries are tiny compared to the Soviet Union. They don't pose a serious threat to us the way the Soviet Union posed a threat to us. And yet we were willing to talk to the Soviet Union at the time when they were saying, `We're going to wipe you off the planet."
So, lefties of the Cold War era, was the Soviet Union a threat, or wasn't it?

The American Left has never thought the Soviets where evil because the Soviet Union was their idols. Reagan said that the USA was the shining city on a hill. To the American Left Moscow was the shining city on a hill. To the Left Reagan was more of a threat than Mother Russia. The idea that a country could completly control its people is the greatest dream of a liberal here in America. If Iran, Cuba, and Venezuela does not pose a serious threat to us then why go over there to talk to their leader anyway? Maybe Obama whats to go overthere so he can learn more about controling his subjects. Oh my bad take care of his subjects.
