Can you ruin your USB stick if you leave the cap off?

Earlier I found a USB stick behind my computer and it had lost the cap. Now, I'm wondering if it's still working right. I've heard that you should always try to keep the cap on. I haven't had a chance to try it out to see if it still works. I'm dreading it. I had some pretty important stuff on that USB stick.
Can you ruin a USB stick or data if you leave the cap off? And, if so, where can I buy a replacement cap for my USB stick? Would appreciate some feedback on this issue.

i lost my the cap of my usb too, but its still working. I just make sure that my dust does'nt get into my usb..the data of my usb is still ok, and i don't have any problems(but i still want to have my usb cap, so i will be sure that it is always protected)... the purpose of the caps is to protect usb from dust and debsris and water too..there are some cases that your your usb will be ruin without the cap like for example, dust gets into it or others.
i am not in favor of usb not having caps, because you may never know what will happen. if you want to buy usb caps, visit this site: http://www.rookaps.com/
RooKaps has a solution to the missing cap dilemma with a couple styles and several color options available in its line of replacement USB drive caps. The caps are made out

I think the only time a USB drive would be ruined is if you got it wet or something like that. I think getting some dust into the drive might cause it to mess up a bit but I do not think dust will wipe the drive clean. I'd just make sure there isn't any dust on the drive and try and wrap it in a soft cloth if you're missing a cap. It may help keep it clean.

Well, if you can dust-off anything from it, it could still work since, dust wouldn't corrupt files, it would just alter the connection in some cases but, surely not affect the files.
Having a USB stick with no cap would not be ruined as long as you keep it somewhere safe. Well, with or without the cap, as long as you keep it safe. Sometimes, dropping them would be a more probable cause for it not to work than having no cap to cover for it at all.
If you already have ruined USB sticks, maybe you can use the caps from those. Then, if you stil don't have a cap for it, perhaps plugging it on your computer for the mean time can be a safe thing.. well, just hope that there are no viruses on it and I think dusts wouldn't have it virus infected.

Yeah you can if you put it in the usb port the wrong way then it can break. Ive had this happen to me with my friends even hough it still works it got bended pretty bad or it could fall of a table and it could break there are many ways for a usb to get damaged.
