Virus and malware writers

The people that write malicious software and attach it to GPT sites and music downloads have some reason for writing the code that they write. Is it jsut pure maliciousness, sociapathy, or is there monetary compensation in it for them? They mess up a lot of stuff with their nasty codes, people lose time, they lose data, piece of mind and a lot of other things behind their systems being infected by malicious software. Why do you think that the people who write and deploy such things do this? And do you think that they have any trouble with their consciences?
