No rice diet all your life!

Shortage of rice and increase of price of rice are in the news today and I really wonder why we have to worry if there is shortage of rice. The more we worry, the more we panic, all the more those greedy merchants will take advantage. In my opinion, the shortage of rice should not be a problem. Why? There are plenty of substitutes which are just as good, like potatoes, corn, oatmeals, cassava, etc. etc. This is my personal stand: I can survive, even without rice so who cares about rice shortage? How about you? Can you also do a no-rice diet all your life??? Please comment!

hi welcome to mylot. maybe just maybe me and my children can live without rice but i am not sure yet. for we havent tried it yet. i think i have to try it first before i can really say my sight into this. i use to work abroads and still eat rice even twice or thrise a week for we are used to eat rice. my children eats potato, bread, oatmeal, yam and other root crops, if i will let them have a diet of no rice i am not sure that they will just forget rice that easy. maybe i can cut the servings of rice instead everyday i can give it to them 4 times a week. and cook pasta intead or potatoes or oats, but still have rice in a week.

I can survive without rice, but i still prefer eating it. Being vegetarian, it's a major source of energy for me. i do not worry about the shortage of rice but i do give my share to help conserve it or consume it efficiently. I only take and eat what i can consume which is normally a half cup of rice and i dont eat rice in the evening unless i have my workout at the gym.

Maybe i can tolerate a no-rice meal for breakfast and supper but not for lunch. Besides people who are used to the rice diet can survive by eating only rice with a little viand, which can be a fried dried fish or salted fish. The most is that they will just simply prepare congee or porridge out of rice. A pinch of salt to it will make it palatable. The other substitutes you mentioned also cost as much as the rice in our place. It is sad to note that rice shortage occured in an agricultural country noted for its rice research and production..
