I need help redecorating my kids room on a budget.

My little kid loves Dora the Explorer, so I'm thinking about decorating her room in that theme. The bad part is that it's going to cost a small fortune. And, right now is not the best time for us to be spending that kind of money. I've thought about just buying a comforter with the Dora character. Maybe that would be enough for now. How would you redecorate your child's room with their favorite character, if you didn't have a lot of extra money? I'm not sure what my budget would be. Maybe less than $250. Do you think that would be enough money to get a decorated kids room with a nice Dora theme? Are there any online stores I should check for Dora stuff? If so, could you give me a link? Thanks for any help you can offer.

We went all out in a Pooh design for the nursery which did indeed cost a small fortune, then we went all out for my daughter's new bedroom which cost less as we had left over paints & things from the nursery. With the Pooh room we just spent the main on the paint, then we grabbed a couple of framed pictures in Pooh theme, plus a couple packets of removable wall stickers, then we bought the cot a Pooh themed set & everything looked great. All you need to do is use eBay (if you can) or cheap stores are good for some things - buy a plain coloured comforter (that matches the wall colours) or you could spend the money & get a single sized Dora designed doona cover, buy wall stickers to add the Dora theme to the room (cheap shops might carry less fancy versions too) - you can get them pretty cheap, another thing that should save you money is to make some things yourself - buy Dora material & have curtains made (rather than buying pre-made ones) - little things like that are much cheaper. You could also try buying plain coloured things & then buying yourself some Dora iron on transfers & then do it yourself - it'll save a fortune. I think $250 is more than enough for a room - it could even be a bit of an overkill - i think our nursery cost us around $160 or so but that also included a FULL repaint, plus cot sets are more expensive than single Doona Covers. Good luck but check all the auction sites coz you can get yourself some GREAT bargains on there, you can also make it easier on yourself by doing things yourself, rather than buyer the already made things!

Oh, just so you know - the $160 we spent was in Aussie dollars.

You got a real deal! I think you're right, though. I can definitely make use of the cheap stores and Ebay and Amazon. I loved all your ideas and have already started my kid room strategy sessions. I'm planning away!

I hope it all works out for you & hopefully it'll be finished in no time without too much strain on the bank account!

I would get the comforter and then just find some plain sheets and a bed skirt that match instead of the bed in a bag stuff (the sheets in those aren't very good quality). You can paint the walls in a color to compliment it too. In my sons room I got one of those big coloring books for about $10 then I traced a few of the pictures on the walls. You can find wallpaper borders online too - I found some for my sons room on e-bay. Curtains are fairly easy to sew yourself if you can find fabric that you like - they are just squares - and fabric is a lot less expensive than buying the premade ones in the store. You could probably find a couple of posters at walmart or kmart with dora for a few dollars each. You could also get one of those cool fuzzy rugs for the floor that matches. I definately wouldn't spend a fortune on dora - she will outgrow it soon. The comforter and posters could easily be changed to the new favorite character in a year or two. My sons room is in Cars, but when it is time to redo it all it will take is a coat of paint over the drawings on his walls and new wallpaper boarder (which he has almost pulled down anyway), comforter, and lamp -- maybe $75. My daughters room is even easier - all we need to change to re-theme her room is her quilt and a couple of posters. I also found the paint for her room in the oops pile at Home Depot. It wasn't quite right for someone else, but it was perfect for us and I got it for $5 a gallon, we made her walls 2 toned so that one gallon of each would be enough. Have fun, and get a little creative - pick one or two center pieces with dora, and just match everything else to them - you'll save a fortune now, and later when it's time to redecorate.
