Hi as2006! I think those with special needs but can still manage to somehow to live in the community be given that chance to lead a productive life within the community. I would not like them to be just in a hostel because somehow it will just make them more feel incapacitated and lonely. And maybe, they could live in the community with some support group or assistance so they can lead a full life despite of their special needs.
Take Care and God Bless! Happy Mylotting!

I think living in the community is good for people with special needs. Why it is a better way to live for people with not so special needs like us too.Only because we can afford to live by ourself some of us make the choice to live alone.A community can provide the necessary Social Support framework for people and hence is the best.

I agree with you. They should be a part of the community!

It really depends on their condition. Some people do better at home but some require special teaching and attention and they go to schools (is that the same as the hostels? Pardon my ignorance). The schools here now offer special glasses for mentally handicapped people and there are some programs available in the community so many more special needs people are staying at home. There is one mentally handicapped young man that goes to church and attends Sunday School with me and I think he is my favorite church member. He always makes me smile and feel at ease.

I think it depends on what sort of special needs that a person has.
I have a niece that is autistic she lives in a place with 24 hour carers but she does have a fair amount of freedom. As she has her own bedroom and bathroom.
My sister felt this was the best situation for her as she really would not be able to cope out on her own.
