My neighbor just found out that her daughter has head lice. My kids were over at her house all day yesterday, and the neighbor girl has been over here playing all week. I don't see anything in my kids hair, but I'm not really sure what I am looking for. Are they big enough that I would actually be able to see them crawling around? What do I do next?

Head lice is very contagious. By the time they are big enough you will see them. The eggs are hard to detect. Good idea to treat them for head lice now before the eggs hatch. Call your doctor and speak to them about what is the best treatment for it.

Thank you for the response. I have been using a nit comb on them, and so far still haven't found anything. I did wash all their bedding and have been vacuuming beds and couches and floors. So far so good - I will keep checking them and using the nit comb for the next week or two.

I am so sorry you are going through this. It happened to my daughter when she was 6 years old. What you are looking for are small, almost clear, hard, kinda tear shaped eggs. They are hard to detect so I think you are on the right track using the nit comb. My daughter had long hair and for weeks I would sit in the evening and comb thru it. I treated her immediately upon learning she had been exposed and I did find a couple of the nits in her hair. They were toward the nape of her neck close to the scalp.

We had the hardest time fighting lice in our home. We finally got to the point now where once a week we are treating the kids heads. You need to go to your local pharmacy and get the RID Lice treatments and look for the metal brissled lice combs they get the eggs and nits out alot better than the stupid plastic ones do. Also bag up every single stuffed animal in your kids rooms and wash every single piece of bedding. For the items that cant be thrown in the washer there is a spray you can get to spray your furniture and there mattresses. I am going to tell you now you are going to need to ger each child there own bottle of lice shampoo. It can be very costly but in the long run it is worth it. Your better off starting prevention NOW before the infestation fully starts or else it will be harder to get rid of later.
