My father, who is now 67 and still actively writing in newspapers, is a journalist and a graduate of a very prominent school (San Beda College)way back decades ago... I was about to follow his footsteps and should've taken up a course in Journalism but to my surprise, he strongly discouraged me! Accordingly,If I wanted to live a comfortable life, I should find another course that would be a source of real income. The scenario was affirmed when my father got another job in one of the municipal courts as a clerk. So in your views, how much do you think is the real earnings of jounalists?

i think journalist don't earn much except for the ones who are on tv. tv pays real good i think. i don't know about the national spread but if you're just writing for local mag or newspaper i don't think you're gonna earn much. well, i'm not really the right person to tell you this coz i don't have an experience in it but i took up journalism in college but didn't finish it. you dad's right. it's hard to make a comfortable living out of writing but when you do it for the love of it i think it's all gonna be worth it. just make sure you have another resource to draw money from when things get a little tight.

yes that's true. TV journalists have higher salaries than print journalists because TV journalists have 2-5 assignments per day. Like what my professor said. :)

Yeah, I agree. If the skill is inherent with you, you just can't help but scratch the itch to write..just like my dad.

That depends on the outlet you are writing for. There are different levels of commitment for newspapers depending on size and size of the area. The same is true for magazines. I'm sure that things have changed a lot since your dad started in the business. I wouldn't totally rule it out if I were you and you were interested in writing as a career.

My career at present is really into writing (must have gotten his genes (*_*)... I didn't take up journalism, though. Thanks for the respond.

Our professor in newspaper management said that it is not that much. The salary of a call center agent is way more better than a journalist. He also stated that if ever there are people who become rich in journalism, think again. HAHA But, it also depends on the person. If writing is really his/her passion and that he/she thinks that doing a homework everyday would make him/her happy then let it be. :)
