I have people coming for dinner and no clue what to make ....

We have a couple arriving here to spend one night with us. We've never met them before and really know nothing about them at all. All I know about their eating preferences is that they aren't vegetarian and will 'eat anything apart from human flesh' (his words on the phone!). I have absolutely no inspiration for dinner. So perhaps someone has an idea I could use? I'm looking for something reasonably easy, but something that's also filling. I have most basic ingrediants already in plus stacks of veggies, but I'll have to pass the shops on my way to collect them from the bus later so I can always buy more. So, what do you think?

ha ha ... I had better keep quiet! If I start rattling off funny sounding names of Indian dishes, you will get more confused than ever. I am sure you will get the inspiration soon. And the previous reply sounded great, though I dunno what French sticks and lasagnas are!! Cheers and happy cooking!

You could rattle off some funny sounding names of Indian dishes and make me hungry!!!! I actually really enjoy Indian food, although where I live you just don't ever see it Anyway, for today's lesson in British style cuisine, a French stick you might have heard of described as a baguette? A long thin loaf? And a lasagne is minced meat layered with tomato sauce, white sauce and sheet pasta, sometimes topped off with cheese. Nice Completely unrelated, but don't you think that the droll smiley I just added looks like someone throwing up? I think it's the look of surprise between the smile and the saliva ....

Thanks for the cooking lessons! It sure sounds yummmmy!! I am sure your guests have been well fed by now and satisfied too. Well, I guess I would go in for a pulau and a gravy of Kingfish or something. Many people might feel pulaus and biryanis are complicated stuff, but I feel they are easy to prepare. And all these food discussions really make my mouth water!! Cheers

Hmmmm, I can see this conversation being very educational! What's Kingsfish? I think biriyani is a superb dish. I'm all for one dish things. Of course, the Indian dishes that I eat are probably a million miles removed from true Indian cuisine. I have a feeling that many dishes are 'Westernized' in the restuarants I occassionally get to visit.

Always a difficult decision Moo...I think if it were me I would serve something that could be prepared earlier in the day ..maybe a massive lasagne..with a french stick..and a salad bowl...just simply because you can cook it and know that its turned out ok before you serve it up!!and then maybe a fruit bowl..cheese...just something relatively easy.Ive always found that the simpler foods tend to be enjoyed the most..and when people eat if they feel relaxed the whole thing goes a lot better...but you may feel quite differently!!

Now if I'd had a brain I would have made something earlier! But here I am again, as disorganised as ever!! I like the idea of lasagne though, I've not done one for ages. I've got no sheet pasta, but if I used twirly pasta it would add an extra something maybe?

Actually I think you're right Alien. If someone is eating in my house as a guest they should be grateful and pleased at whatever I produce :-)

Everyone I speak to has a different way of preparing it! It sounds like it's something really versatile.

i was talking about meatloaf with another MyLotter just a few days ago. Not being American, I had no clue what it was! I've promised myself I'll try it out, now I know, but perhaps not for guests the first time.

Wot's in the fridge! Wotever is in there grate it all up - potatoes, carrots, onions, garlic, celery, finely chopped beans, peas. Got any herbs? Add some. An egg/or two and mix the lot together. a bowl of flour mix it all together and put it into either: patties or balls. Dust in the flour and fry. A bowl of salad or vegetables on the side with a mustard cream sauce and I dare anyone not to like it!

Do you know, that is an EXCELLENT idea! Sounds like the sort of thing that's easy to make, cheap too as it uses up all those odds and sods, and really quick! I'm impressed, and I'm going to give it a try sometime very soon. Thanks a million, I love getting new ideas. The best ideas are also things that I can tweak myself. Cool

I've always had success with enchiladas. I cook some chicken, onion and peppers in fajita seasoning then spoon the mixture into fajita-sized flour tacos (or whatever fits the pan you'll be using) that I've spread with refried beans, sprinkle a little cheese on it and roll it up. I put in in a pan that I've coated with non-stick spray and when the pan is full of them I pour green chili sauce over it and put it in the over, 350 for about 30 minutes. The last ten, I add cheese, peppers and onion to the top of it. Everyone loves these enchiladas. They're fairly cheap to make and I think you can get all those ingredients where you are. If you have some leftover beef or other meat, you can use that. Good luck!

I don't think I've ever cooked enchiladas, although I do rather enjoy eating them. They do sound a fairly frugal choice, so perhaps that's an idea I'll store away for trying another time. Thanks for the pointer!
