Baby Sisters

Iris and Her Baby Sisters - I replanted some Iris that were sprouting around the property and all did well, but a few came up vertically challenged!

As I've mentioned in other discussions, I'm renting a small house and have no idea what may have been growing here prior to us living here. I saw Irises coming up and wanted to move them, so replanted some along a privacy fence that hides a storage shed, and then a few more along the front of the house, really not knowing how any of them would turn out. All of them have done well and most are blooming, with more that should be out any day. I don't think the move hurt them any, but about a third of them that are by the fence are very, very short (as Irises go) and are absolutely adorable! Anyway, I thought I'd share a picture of Iris with her little sisters. Have you ever moved or replanted something and had them survive, but not do quite as well as you expected?

I had some calla lilies in the back that a friend gave me. They did fine there, but when I moved them to the front yard, the squirrels thought I put them on the menu and made short work of them. This year, my irises came up (they are in a container) and my hostas. I will be digging those up when we move and taking them with me. They've done great and are getting so big. I can't wait to have a nice yard again. The yard we have here is a hundred times better than it was, but still not "child friendly". There is a lot of bare earth and when it rains, it just pours down the back yard and kills everything. That's one reason why I had to move the calla lilies in the first place.

The squirrels are abundant here too, but so far I haven't seen any damage they've done to anything. We kept them pretty well fed with corn and peanuts and such. I love calla lilies but have never had any. I want my own place too, so I can do what, when and how I want ...

They really are adorable little things. VERY short and I never expected them to flower, but they did and they're the cutest of the bunch!

I will comment on your picture when I see it... Yes, I have transplanted things that did better than expected or did worse than expected..This is why I hate moving plants, but that is all part of gardening, isn't it? I would be happy to have my plants set just so and then not have to worry about them, but then you don't get to change things around, can't have it both ways..

I didn't really expect these to do much of anything, I just didn't want them where they were so I gave it a shot. Every one of them survived, and only a few haven't formed flowers (but not all of them do anyway). A few are very vertically challenged, but they are still perfect and they did flower, which is so cool!
