The first program i would absolutely recommend to try and fix it is a program called spinrite. It isn't a free program but it almost never fails with data recovery and hard drive maintenance.

I would also recommend spinrite (actually found out about the program a year or so ago from Timothy31) Its very handy. If the hard drive is still running and you're just looking for files to be recovered I would also recommend File scavenger. Again its not a free program but its well worth the money.

well there are times when i rely on the specialist to do the job and the one is when there are hard error on the HDD. this is the time when it is better not to do anything but give the HDD the guys and let them do the talking. they have ways to do. but yes, if you have a external casing and a spare HDD then do try to connect the one and look to retrieve the data forst
