This is a question I've never given much thought to before now. Sure, Iknow that it is a day when we honor our nation's veterans. This year it has so much more meaning to me because of the loss of my sister and mother within the last couple of years. I recently experienced the possibility of losing my other sister and that might be the reason I feel so deeply about this Memorial Day. So, what does the day mean to you on a personal level?

For me, it is a time to remember our veterans and honor them for their great sacrifice. Earlier, we watched the 19th Memorial Day Concert on TV and we sung along with the hundreds of people at the concert as the national anthem and other patriotic songs were played. It was also a night that my husband thought of his two uncles who served in the military and he felt bad that back then when they were alive, he never asked about their war experiences. Tomorrow will also be a day when we kicked-off summer with a backyard barbeque at our house and spend time with family.

I always thought of Memorial Day as the unofficial start of summer. It was the day when the pool opened and back in the day, it was a hot day and my friends and I would wait and see who could be the first in the pool. In my teens it meant a jazz concert near the river. Now it is baseball on t.v.

I guess because I have lost my parents this would be a day to set aside to pay extra respect to them....but then again it could be said that everyday I think of them so eevryday is memorial day. But my father was a veteran of world war two....a disabled vet who was proud to have served this country inspite of the fact that he was injured. I now have two son in laws that are career military...who would give up their lives to protect us and keep our freedom...so memorial day is always and for as long as I can remember has been a very special day to our family too!
