My son has informed me that the schools are modifying the school week for next year. The kids will be going to school four days a week instead of five days, and stay an hour later each day. The system is adopting this schedule to save on the gas bill. That way they will only be running the school busses four days a week instead of five.

That does not sound too bad, at least for the kids. The parents might find themselves in more of a mess, if they have to pay a babysitter.

My kids are excited about the three day weekends they will get, but I am waiting to see whether they'll be happy coming home in the dark in wintertime.

It will save money, but is a sad commentary on what is going on in the world. Another gas saving tip would be to stream line the routes. That is, students living way off the main roads would have to come to a main artery to be picked up. This 'stream lining' shortens routes much more than you think. Be prepared next for them to turn the thermostate way down about 30 minutes before everyone leaves, leave it DOWN while no one is there, and to not turn it back up until the first child arrives.

I guess many offices will have to tighten their belts and make changes to be able to provide close to the same level of service since the gas bill is going so high. Now might be the time to invest in some warm sweaters.
