i put this in "enigma" because it really is a mystery to me, and id like it explained by whomever chooses to explain it. WHY do people have such a fascination and idolistic worship of oprah? i get spam emails constantly with the subject line "oprah reccomends hoodia!" "oprah uses green tea!" "buy oprahs favorite things for fathers day!" whyyyyyyyyyyyyy?! shes a newscaster turned talk show host/actress.. she isnt an authority on anything (least of all weight loss) so why does the public flock to her oppinion so much that she now has a newsletter, magazine, book club, specific segments of public announcements.. telling people wtf to buy, think, use, read, do ? i know we all get a silly sense of using something of someone famous (remember john voits car on seinfeld ?) but come on people.. explain to me what is it about this woman that has people clammering for her reccomendations and endorsements? do you really think that because she uses, reccomends, yaps about something (that she gets paid endorsements for!) it simply MUST be good? or is it that if you use something she chatters about, that you gain a connection to this icon? and why do you want this connection??

I don't get it either, think its silly really. I'm not going to use or do anything because someone else does. Ya know there is a church in her name??? Kinda scary really really, what's this world coming to??

wow.. ok, watched the vid you linked up here. and kowing me, i wil scurry for more information.. but just wow. while i do agree with some of her points, such as there isnt only "one" way to reach spiritual enlightenment, etc.. this woman has pretty much gone over the edge and proclaimed herself a god! not even jesus christ himself as a mortal made this proclamation.. nor did the tuatha when they were still human.. or any of the various other pantheons that have been in existance since the existance itself. even with my own god compleX and argumentative nature have i ever had the audacity to lay claim to deityship (is that even a word?) this honestly is even more frightening than the scientology theory of giant alien clams! this is just too rich ..;shakes head;..

Wow what a rant. I personally have no clue why anyone would want to buy something that she has endorsed. I personally avoid it. LOL!!! I buy what I like through reading snippets of a book I don't like to feel like a cow and hearded like cattle to read something or buy something. I like my individuality. I don't want to become a lemming.

Because tessah, it increases a persons validity in their own eyes. see? they think it gives them more credibility, if you see what i mean. Robert

It isnt a fascination as much as she is well known. People feel a connection with her because she talks about real things, she has lost lots of weight. Because she is so well known and a self made billionaire people respect her judgement. Myself I am not a big Oprah fan but I can understand what people might think.

I am lucky as here in UK we don't get inundated with Oprah but I do get those emails you were saying about for some reason but I just press delete. I make my own choices and celebrety endorsements don't make one iota of a difference to my choices. I can see why this sort of thing would annoy. Ellie :D

Personally, I can't stand her. I think she is a bigot and and a**. So, I don't care what book she recommends or how she lost the weight this time. People look for answers and when someone speaks in an authoritative, manner some people listen.
