How would you know if it's a PROMISE?

Deep within me I'm praying that what I heard from a friend was a promise. My friend did not say the keyword "PROMISE". I keep on telling myself that I should not expect. That what my friend said was just some sweet farewell words and it was not a promise after all. But I am expecting from those words.
