                    I think phrasing it as a question instead of a statement definitely encourages people to answer.

                    yeah, definitely. Thats because it is easier to ask a simple question and have people weigh in with their own stories or preferences than to actually hold a conversation. Its easier on both poster and commentors.

                    I think most of us that tend to post questions in our posts have found that if you post just a discussion with no question in it, you receive not many replies.
