In Michigan, a doctor received a certified letter demanding payment for a fifty-one cent tax bill he owed! The certified letter cost the government more than five dollars to send! What do you think about this? Here is the article I read: http://www.arcamax.com/weirdnews/s-347998-557731

I just have two questions regarding this one. First is how a doctor could get by with only owing 51 cents, and second, why didn't he just pay it? The last time I looked at the realities of life, doctors (and I should know because I am one) get a decent amount of money and ought to be able to afford to pay their taxes. Yes, maybe sending the letter seems wasteful, but if the guy had paid his taxes on time as he should have he wouldn't be getting such a notice.

LOL, you always see the nice side of people, whereas I tend to ferret out rats. Viva la difference! There was a mistake on one of our property bills this year, but they sent out another notice.

What is your specialty? What kind of doctor are you? I went to your website! Very lovely. I just think there must be a better way to save money when collecting taxes!

It is possible that he had already paid, but miscalculated! It was property tax that he owed.

That is about one of the stupidest things I have ever heard of. Basically, they are saying it was worth it to spend over five dollars to a man who owed fifty-one cent. I would have laughed at that letter as well.

That is exactly what it seems to me too! What a joke, at the taxpayers expense!

Absolutely crazy the cost of the adminstration and stamp works out far more but it is a crazy world we live in and the government services are the worlds worse for it. They do it here in the UK too. I recently received a cheque for overpayment of poll tax from 1988 (about £29), over ten years ago and that had to trace my whereabouts now to send it and employ temps at a much higher rate to help sort out all the paperwork and that is why we pay so much in taxes because of this stupidity on their part. I think they may charge him for the postage! The article said they will charge a late fee no matter what!

How silly - to chase him for the sake of 51 cents!! I mean it's not like he was probably a thief or some horrible person who did it on purpose as for that amount it was obviously a little mistake on the amount he paid! x

I think so too! How many times has this happened? Add up all the times and it becomes obvious that way too much is being spent on things like this!

H olivemai, If you think that's dumb, just recently I changed telephone service providers, and then got a bill in the mail for $0.02 - which is REALLY dumb because, quite aside from the cost of the letter itself plus postage (and my time which they wasted) Australian currency only goes down to $0.05. To make matters even worse still, the reason that I got the $0.02 bill was that it was GST on the residual bill which I had paid using a credit card over the phone. So did this mean that if I then paid this idiot $0.02 bill over the phone, they'd round up the GST on THAT and send me another bill for $0.01? I finally decided to phone them and complain about this nonsense, which they assured me was just a bug in the system, and they promised to delete the account owing. Sure enough, just last week I received another bill from them, for $0.00 (!).

It must have been a quark! How about being charged to pay it? Sometimes a fee is added if you use a credit card to pay or pay by phone! At least it is not too difficult to pay online! Too bad more government agencies are not using email to notify people, thus saving a lot of postage! Some businesses do pay less for postage, but it is still something that adds up!
