Do you still have a land line?

Since cell phones have taken over in the convenience department, most people have cancelled having a regular phone at home. Wireless seems to be the way to go nowadays. But, some people still like having a home phone. How about you? Still have a land line? If you do, why?

Despite having mobile phone, we still have a landline basically for my internet connection and it's another cheaper option for local calls. You just have to pay for the fixed monthly fee and you could make local call for free no matter how long and how many calls you make. It's true that wireless has gone a long way because for the convenience it makes that you could take your mobile phones anywhere you are, but we still keep our landline.

Hello gitfiddleplayer. We do still have a land line at my house. Although we have considered cancelling it, my husband has many conference calls in his work and feels we must have a land line. I do think the time is coming when people will omit their "home phones." I still feel that I can hear the other person more clearly on a land line than on my cell phone. The sound clarity just seems better to me. PearlGrace

We still have our land line phone for a couple of reasons. First off, our cell phones don't work at home due to living too far out in the country and in a bad signal area. Second, we get our DSL internet through the local phone company and would have to pay them even if we tried say Vonage, so I really can't see any reason to not have the land line.

Ok, I understand. Cell phones are good in the city but farther out they are just paper weights.

We still have a land line. We've got cell phones and house phone. Mainly the only reason we still have land line is because thats where our internet connection comes from. We dont do a whole lot of talking on the house phone, mainly on cell phones.

Though every member of my family has our own cellphone we still have never cancelled our regular land line phone. This is because my husband’s elder sister is reluctant to use cellphone. I think she might have the phobia of using this device.

I saw something last night that talked about cell phones giving you brain cancer or tumors. They did a study showing that a small amount of radiation does get transfered but its the same as using a microwave oven. I think younger people should do some research because they will be using cell phones the rest of their lives. If you're an older person past 40 then it will take 15-20 years if something did develope, but most older folks don't use cell phones as much so the risk is lower. Best of luck convincing your sis in law.

I have to have a landline for my dsl but just have a basic pkg. with unlimited local calling. I sometimes use the landline to make local calls and use my cell for the long-distance calls or to call my hubby since it's free to call each other.

We have both cell phones and a land line. Cell phones are WAY too expensive to be without a land line. We pay almost twice as much for a limited amount of time as we do for unlimited amount of time.

Yes I do. It's more for receiving calls rather than dialing out. It's cheaper for my in-laws and parents to dial the land line instead of my cell phone. It costs more than double to dial a Swiss cell than it is to dial the land line so yeah...

I think a lot of people have it for incoming information too. Cell phones are good but when you can get a signal a land line works everytime. Unless the power is out.

we still have our land line. aside from my cellphone. it's much cheaper to use the land line in calling other people than using the cellphone. we just used cellphone for calling others if they are outside their house and it's very urgent. i always like to have a home phone so that i can check how my parents are doing each day when i am not around (in the office/school), they're getting old and home phone is the easiest way to communicate with them.

My husband and I did away with the land line a long time ago. It was too expensive. When it is long distance to call out of town six miles away it is time to start looking for something else. We did and now we have cell phones and no land line and it is a lot cheaper this way.

oh i see, maybe we just chanced upon the companies that also require landlines when you apply for credit cards. but yeah, it affects your chances of being approved if you dont have one.

True and not true, I've seen companies requesting information based on your SSN now, its a better way to check your credit or status.

yes,we still do.i'd love to switch it over, but it would be an absolute nightmare having to notify all mom's relatives, doctors and the navy. the navy in particular would be a nightmare, because anytime you change anything, you have to fill it out in triplicate, then they lose 2 and misplace the third

Ah, the NAVY, I had a friend tell me what NAVY meant. Never Again Volunteer Yourself :) He's a card. Are you in the NAVY or is someone else in your family?

I have a land line. It is required to have a dial up connection. If i wish to access the internet thats all that is currently available for my land location. If i could get high speed my land line would be gone so fast.

I still have a land line and that is because I am the only person in the house that has a contract phone, everyone else is pay as you go and it costs less to make calls from a landline than it is to make calls from a mobile phone, so basically it is for financial purposes. There is also the issue that forms make you fill in house numbers compulsory some times and if you didn't have one then you wouldn't be able to fill in the form.

That's not right, not everybody has to have a land line, sounds like discrimination to me.

I think it is down to tradition really. Most forms say: Telephone Number*: Mobile Number: The * makes it compulsory while the mobile number isn't, so if you don't have a land line I think you can just put your mobile number in there, but I think they are asking for different numbers.

I still do. I need it to call other relatives, friends and businesses. If I'm gonna use my cell to call them, Boy, my husband would have a fit when he sees the billing statement.! It's much cheaper to call using the landline, besides, some people are just at their houses, so why not call them thru their landlines as well. Exception would be, if I'm out and I can't see any other available pay phones, I have no other choice but to use my cell. Only if it's very important or an emergency..Cell phone charges here are so high, even text messages are the same. So, why not use the landline if you can..
