Have you ever removed a big tree that is close to your house?

I have a couple big trees by my house and after the harsh winter I do think they need to come down as many branches are just hanging there. Living out in no mans land we do not have people that come out here to take down trees and everyone tells me you have to do it yourself. Well I have no clue where to start with that. I am curious if anyone has done it and if they have any tips on how to remove it without removing my house too. Oh and not to worry I am not going to head out there and start chopping it just yet*L*

We have a big tree between us and our neighbours that they wanted to remove. The tree people said it was not good to remove it all in one season due to affecting the water table - trees use lots of water. So just prune back the troublesome branches at first. We found that was enough and so the tree is still a safe place for the welcome birds to nest in.
