Hey friends,I would like to know how many of you like Guitar and how many of you actually play it. This sudden question is because on this birthday,my parents are going to present a guitar and they have already disclosed the news. As of now I play keyboard(quite well) and Violin (hopeless player),lol. so,I was not very excited to know about this new gift. But they want me to try my hand at it. So, the thing is,I am not able to decide which one to buy.Can you give your suggestion.I don't want to end up with a complicated one (i'm a student and studies demand a lot of time). Could you please suggest which one to get? Acoustic or electric? I would be playing it mainly for Country and sometimes, maybe, for Pop music too.

Dearest, Lucky you! How I wish I could get the things I would love! *grin* I am an utter misfit to respond to this but could not resist to the lure.lol..I used have a friend who used to play guitar, key board, drums, harmonica, piano and what not but hopeless in all! We used to succumb to his enthusiasm only to realise what we were doing! Then when I was in high school I met someone who developed my love for country and pop music. He used to play guitar and used to tell mt about Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan....He used to swear by JH. I hardly gave any importance to his knowledge of music. Now I admit it was my lack of commitment. Now he plays for a leading band in Calcutta, Cactus.

hehehehe, are you politely hinting at me too.lol. I know how it feels when you are subjected to listen to a hopeless player and that too with a wide smile and sparkle in your eyes, lest you betray your true feelings.ROFL..hehehehehe. Well,i have seen my mom doing it for me. No,mimpi,i know when i play well,or hopelessly disappointing.thank God, because then my friends and loved are spared.hehehehehe. i am sincerely going to try my hand it,now that my friends and family want to.I hope i turn out to be like the other friend of yours. mimpi thankyou very much for responding to this post and you are no misfit for sure. *hugs*

Worthy It's actually to do with the passion of the player and also your love for him/her. People who love you will never like to see you demoralised, can they? And when you know the times you are playing it bad their job gets easier. Having said this, if my intellect doesn't betray me, I know how religious you are in things you do. Only thing is that Studies should take the front seat now since you are at a vital crossroad of life. Love and luck.

I play guitar. For a beginner, I would suggest you buy acoustic first for a number of reasons. 1) You can bring it anywhere without having to carry extra equipment like amplifier(if you have electric guitar), 2. It's a best way to start since the string of acoustic has a little bit of more tension than electric guitar, so it's a great way to develop callous on your finger tips, which is unavoidable and somewhat needed if you plan to seriously play guitar. And lastly, electric guitar need electricity(for the amplifier) acoustic doesn't (unless you want to put a pick-up), so you can play anywhere anytime, even in places where there's no electricity.

Worthy, I wish you a very very happy Birthday in advance (if you please tell me the exact date, hopefully, I'll convey my wishes to you on the D'Day). Hope you would enjoy your 'musical' birthday gift and learn and love to play a guitar soon. Unfortunately, I do not have any idea about guiar, so am unable to give you any suggestion on it.

My first guitar was a basic accoustic. Partly to see if i enjoyed it and whether it was worth spending money on anything bigger and more powerful. In all fairness i would sit and strum and get annoyed with it very easily. In part its because i idolised electric guitar players and having an accoustic was not what i'd hoped for. Many years later i saw a decent-priced electric guitar and bought it whilst at uni. I'm not very good, but i can play some of the riffs that i used to listen to. I really only use it as a stress-reliever and it makes me feel good to just chill with it. I tab by ear as i see so many inaccurate ones online and also because some songs do not show guitar tabs. Basically its down to you as an individual, what you want/expect to gain from it. I'd certainly recommend an accoustic as a tester, but if you can find a good-priced electric and already have musical passion, go for it :)

Thanks Matthammer, for describing at length why i should go for the basic acoustic guitar.you are so right, first i should know whether i enjoy and can handle the acoustic, before going for the electric one too, that is, if i find myself really good at it. :)

Hey fellow musician. I also play guitar. And pretty well I might add. I also play the keyboard, not well, but enough to say that I play, lol. And I play bass. I used to play violin when I was nine, but that failed to stay with me. I'm thinking about picking it up again. I would suggest for your first guitar, and since you want to play country, an acoustic. Start there and see where it gets you. Then get an electric. And always remember to have fun with it.

I play electric guitar. For a beginner I would suggest an acoustic guitar because of the music that you want to play. I personally think that country music sounds much better on an acoustic than electric. The higher gauge strings will be great for building up the skin on the ends of your fingers.

i would suggest an acoustic guitar for you too. you can get an electric gutiar later when you are already used with the guitar fretboard. but i guess you'll easily get the hang of it. you already know keyboards and violin, so it wouldn't be that hard. good luck!

Worthy, I just asked my friend who plays guitar and play it well. He told me that acoustic guitar would be fine for you. Do let us know what have you decided on. And BTW, when is your birthday?

Get an acoustic. If you aren't sure if you will continue, you can get an inexpensive Takamine (go to Musiciansfriend.com) and learn, then upgrade if you decide to keep playing. A Takamine Jasmine is like $100, so it won't break the bank if you decide to give it up. I think you will enjoy it. I play my guitar every day.

You should definitely go for an acoustic guitar first. I also think you should try a bit of classical first. It's not necessary, but i found out that it helped a lot with technique. (i started with classical before going lead). Anyway, up to you. :)

Hi! Well, each one prefers a kind of guitar (eletric or acoustic, with single coils or hambucking pickups, Floyd Rose or fixed bridge, ...). So, if you plan to be a weekend guitar player, you doesn't need an expensive and complicated instrument! If I were you, I'd try a stratocaster model, because it's a very versatile guitar, that way you can play almost every kind of music! See ya!
