Hot flushes after babies...or menopause?

Ok, here's my problem - am I alone or are there others out there with similar problems? What type of symptoms do you have?
About 4 years back I was trying to get pregnant - I was about 37 years old, and when I went off the pill I found my periods were quite irregular and very short. I queried this and wondered if I should go back on the pill to regulate things again before trying to get pregnant.
The doctor told me not to hold my breath hoping to fall pregnant. She said that at my age the reason my periods were all over the place was possibly because I was starting early menopause... well, less than a month later I was pregnant! Not just pregnant either - but carrying TWINS.
The pregnancy went OK and was fairly normal as twin pregnancies go (I got cholestasis towards the end but otherwise OK).
Once things settled down and I had my beautiful babies home I began to notice that I was suffering from hot flushes and over nearly 3 years they have not stopped. They do seem to occur erratically and usually when I am fighting some type of bug (flu, cold, etc).
I did quiz my doctor (different dr from before) about this and was told that it is just my body's way of fighting the germs. OK, but it never happened before!
Just to add to my confusion, after my twins I had a coil fitted - one of the ones which has hormones included in it so that it actually stops your periods - so I can't even use that as a guage.
I am now 40 and the coil is set for 5 years (another 3.5 to go) - does this mean that I might be going through 'the change' and wouldn't know it because of the hormones? Other than the hot flushes that is???
Any comments or thoughts? Anyone else having similar problems after having a baby/babies?
Thanks All

Hello,
I have to say that directly after I've had my children (I have three) I did suffer from hot flashes of somesort. I was just always hot. I think it's just from hormones calming down. I also noticed that a lot of my hair always falls out after having a baby - which is irritating because our plumbing always gets clogged up and my hubby gets mad (smile). But it has never gone on for years. Maybe just that year following the birth.
