I am wanting to start a fast tomorrow. I have no idea how long my first time should be. I am thinking 48 hours or 2 days, but not sure if that is adequate.

I had a friend who would fast about once a month and sometimes do it for about a week. I never understood that. You know that the meal we eat in the morning is called Breakfast because we are breaking the fast from going all night without eating. In the old Jewish culture they could not eat after sunset so on long winter nights it was an extended time between meals. The primary purpose of a fast is to clean the body and mind of impurities. A 24 hour fast does a good job at that but a 48 hour fast does even better. If you have any medical conditions clear it with your doctor first. If not get prepared to cleanse yourself. It is surprising how clear your mind is afterwards. Even with all the dreaming of a big fat cheese burger during the fast.

Speaking of which... We switch to turkey burgers several months ago. I did not care much for them but everyone else in the family loved them. Now I have gotten used to them and they are the choice for the BBQ.

I am right there with you on the turkey. lol. Its just not the same once they grind it up. I'd rather have a whole carcass than a pound of ground, but I guess. *sigh* All for the sake of health.

Well in my case since I am now on Sparkpeople, a big fat turkey burger with a splurge of smoked swiss. MMMM.

A fast can be for any amount of time that you choose. Most common is a single day. I have had to do a 48 hour fast for medical reasons and it left me drained of all energy. Remember that water is still essential and is allowed during fasting. And when you are done with the fast start back eating slowly.

Yes, I cannot do without water. I will have to think about this for awhile. I know one guy did it for 2 weeks once. Scared his mom silly.

I think the best bet is to first off think about all or any health issues you may have...secondly decide what type of fast you want to do since there are various forms, figure out what your goal is and if you've never done it before I would seriously consider talking to your doctor FIRST just for safety reasons.... When I fast (for detoxing purposes) I try to do it for 2-5 days (I'm actually due for one soon) and I dont just cut out food and drink right away, if I'm doing it for 5 days for example I'll wean myself from regular foods to fresh fruits and strictly water, then just water then towards the end back to fresh fruits/veggies then back to my normal eating habits if that makes sense..

It makes perfect sense. I have no health issues. I do tend to get light headed and dizzy, but I think I can power through that to some extent. If I feel too bad, I can always stop until next time.

Listen, as long as you are truly fasting and during this time are in your Word and praying to God, He will honor it! It's up to you to set a good timeline and type of fast. Fasting can be from anything - liquids, food, types of food, even fasting from TV, radio, talking on the phone, etc. The fasting from food & liquids is really good because it allows your spirit to become stronger than your flesh - but you need to make sure to replace that natural food with the bread of life. Hope this helps.

Depends on your own commitment, if 2 days is enough for you, than go for it :) but if u feel it doesn't adequate, than just add some more days. But for first timer i think 1-2 days is ok since fasting is not that easy. It doesn't just about not eating, but i think it's more focusing on how we control our emotion, not easily get angry, upset and not following all this "flesh" wants :) I usually do it just for 1-2 days & for me the most important thing in fasting is how we do the fast, i usually give more time to pray & read the bible. About not eating things i usually do it in 2 ways : 1. I eat breakfast in the morning at 6 am, then i stop eating & drinking at all until 6pm, then i eat & drink again normally. 2. The day before i fast (yesterday), i stop eat anything at 10pm, than i start to fast until tomorrow noon at 2-3pm, depends on how my body condition, if i feel i still can fast for a few more hours, i keep doing it, until i think i can't handle it anymore. it's better to stop it right away than suddenly fainted or fall sick LOL

This is very good advice. I have to start again, because I forgot my intentions already. What a maroon I can be. lol! I am doing it for religious reasons, not for any other. I need to break away from the foods I normally eat and start fresh with the dietary regimine I have been directed to eat. Which is plant life, fish, fowl. Everything else, I need weaned from. And this is the best way to break that addiction. Sort of detoxing the chemicals and additives that make food addicting.
