GTA only redefined 3-d, it had alot less special qualities in 2-d. Take it back ten years before the release of GTA and you'll find Sid Meiers Pirates in 1987. What has pirates got to do with Gangsters, nicking cars, and causing mayhem? Well alot, within this game you could 'boat-jack' other ships, fight, and were both based on criminal lifestyles, both playing on the 'go anywhere, do anything' ideal. GTA isn't alone in the creation of free-roam, and if you looked beyond console games you'll find it (which is natural) ripped off many other games which makes it completely ironic when True Crime/Scarface et cetera is labelled as ripping off GTA. Although there is no question about what GTA has brought to the 3-d world.
