What music should I try to listen to at least once?

I must admit that when I am driving, I wind up listening to talk radio shows but I would like to learn more about some of the music out there... When I was younger, I was into John Denver, Karen Carpenter, Julie Andrews, Ed Amea, Henry Belafante, Cat Stevens, Captain and Tenille, Simmon and Garfunkel as these were the only artists my parents would allow into the house. I also used to dance to music from the disco era of the 70s... Given this history, what music of today would you recommend I try to listen to at least once?

I'm not too good at this, but I'd suggest the Red Hot Chili Peppers for anyone. Their old stuff has a real funky, out-there sound, but a lot of their new music has calmed down a lot. They're a real fun band, but still keep meaning in their music. Other than that, Most reccommendations com from back when. Billy Idol and Elton John (These two are on COMPLETELY different tacks, but I include them both for the sake of diversity) or Billy Joel. \m/ Becky Ann

Fado What is it? Portuguese traditional genre of music. Always has a story behind it even if people don't understand it. As an example here is a link for a famous singer during a concert abroad http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ElLSBx9Jo8 listen to a couple more and form an opinion ;)

glad to know my answer was a positive one. I might add that there are several genres of Fado, some are more sad, some a bit funnier. specific areas of the country have specific kinds of Fado. The singer I posted has albums for sale around the world and is getting many shows all around. some like it because she experiments a lot, other don't like it as much for the same reasons, still her voice is very good and so are the musicians. the main characteristics of Fado remain in the voice of the singer and the Portuguese Guitar, a 12 string guitar that is specifically played with the finger nails. Enjoy :D

I think ballads, R&B would be good for your ears too, as I really don't know what genre you prefer. In my case, I listen a lot to rock music, some pop and ballad, with some of those oldies music as well. Try listening to different genres, since there are lots of them to choose from.

You need to listen to the soundtrack from the movie Once. It is really awesome. I would also recommend the Robert Plant/Allison Krauss CD. Amazing.
