When you go away on vacation....

Do you board your pet in a kennel or have friends/family take care of it? I worked in several kennels when I was a teenager and witnessed some horrible acts from my co-workers. As a result of that, I only allow friends and family to take care of our dog, cat, and lizard.

I would always have someone come in to care for my cats. Cats do better in a familiar environment, so I would leave them home. One time my cat sitter couldn't get here because it snowed. She got someone to plow the snow so she could care for my cats. I was happy to reimburse her for that even though she said I didn't have to do so since she hadn't had permission to hire a snow plower.

That was really awesome of the cat sitter to do that. It just shows how seriously she took the responsibility of being the sole caretaker for your cats.

If I can I take my furbabies (my two kitties) with me. If I can't take them with me I have a friend (who also happens to be a cat lover) look in on them. I think they are more comfortable in their own home. I actually call my friend and ask if she has gone by and seen them--I worse than a mom!

My fiancee calls his mom when we get to the airport (keep in mind that this is before we've even taken off) to see how our dog is doing. And we check in on everyone at least once a day while we are away, they're our kids!

I have always taken my dogs with me. There are many motels that will allow pets now. I just don't want to put my dogs under any undo stress. I just don't know what they would do if we left them and to be honest I really never want to find out!

If we are going on a short road trip (i.e. to Albuquerque, NM), we take our dog with us too and he enjoys sleeping in the hotel bed since he doesn't get to do that at home. Unfortunately, I don't think the cat and lizard would enjoy the trip!

When I was younger, my grandparents used to take me on a month-long vacation to Florida (we lived in Ohio at the time), and they would leave our dog at a local kennel. After staying away that long, the dog would seem like it didn't recognize us at first when we got back. Now, I have moved away and I live with my partner, and we have a cat. I don't imagine we will be taking a long vacation anytime soon, but when and if we do, I would either leave our cat with a friend, or try to take her with us!

Yeah, it can traumatic for a dog to be left that long. I have been driving before and seen cats in the backseats of cars, so some people are able to travel with them. I think ours would get too nervous.
