IVF Newborns abandoned because they're girls

Soapbox - A Soapbox moment here....

A British couple abandoned their newborn IVF twins at a hospital; because they wanted a boy. They were unwilling to bring up female children. * The husband wanted a son to carry on the family name. He then asked when would his wife would be healthy enough so the couple could have another crack at fertility treatment for the desired son? * Here is the whole story, and I'm hopping off the soap box. I was just so shocked, although I shouldn't be... maybe it is my cultural viewpoint. I'm American and female. Both of these parents were from India originally, where boys are valued higher than girls, and they were not young. * http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article1220338.ece

Of course it's horrible and disgusting that some people still believe that females are "disposable". I will never understand people like that. I hope that future fertility treatments are unsuccessful and they remain childless for the rest of their lives. Having said that, at least they carried the babies to term rather than abort them and at least they left them at the hospital instead of in a dumpster somewhere.

"Having said that, at least they carried the babies to term rather than abort them and at least they left them at the hospital instead of in a dumpster somewhere." good point! although ive got to wonder..they had to have prior knowledge that the babies were female right? if you can afford IVF that means you can afford all the doctors visits that go along with it..so wouldnt they have had at LEAST 1 sonogram done? and on top of knowing they were girls..WHY didnt they abort? and be able to "try" for boys that much sooner? ugh! this is just to agitating to keep thinking about lol!

You could open a fish & chip shop on that one my friend! They dumped those girls, so they will be examined to the nth degree.

Have either of you seen the latest news on this... http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article1225298.ece Now they are saying it was just a misunderstanding because the father's English is not so good, but that the girls will be raised "with love". I hope that's the truth but it all sounds pretty fishy to me.

It is so sad that even in todays modern world... some people are still close minded in term of gender... i feel sorry for those two girls... they are clearly the victim of a gender bias society... but there is no point in forcing the parents into caring for them... that might just lead to more problems... i hope a more loving family will step in to adopt the twins... i certainly would if i have the financial capacity....

Once the legal case is closed, I think those two will be snapped up in a heartbeat. Cute babies are in short supply of any gender in Europe. Infertility is a big problem.

that is one of the reasons I could never be in the medical field because I would probably say or do something (like smack them silly) that would not be very nice.............. "The mum aged 59 and dad, 72, conceived in India with fertility treatment and returned to England for the birth. " At that age, they should be exstatic it was even HUMAN... holy moly!!!!! Oh well, it's in God's hands. They will get what's coming to them.

It's a stumper all right! At least having given birth in the UK, those tots won't end up in a bin or in the street. We can thank God for that.

Er, that's the cute way of saying, contact us so we can sick the law on them. Those babies were abandoned in a callus manner, and in camera happy UK, catching them won't be that difficult.

India isn't the only place where things like this take place. I have heard it from other countries too. I think this is just SICK!! Just goes to show how under valued females are. I hope they tell him NO more treatments.

China, and Africa also undervalue girls. Atrocities are everywhere against females. This pair may be seeing the inside of a prison, never mind IVF treatment bans!

I am shocked also and disgusted as well.If they did not want girls then why even take the risk of having girls. I hope somebody kind andd thoughtful will adopt these precious twin girls. such callousness deserves to be punished for that. there was no excuse for that what so ever.

I'd imagine the girls are in the middle of a legal case against the parents at the moment, and the age of their parents, the hospital wants to make sure everything is fine with them. Then I think they will go with new parents.

How sad! To not love and want your own children! And to abandon them...

There are many reasons to give up a child. The gender is the most callus I think.

I'm just astounded. Twins would be wonderful! On the other, just to be grateful for small mercies - at least they left the children at the hospital.

Those girls will grow up. For that they can thank a UK hospital.

When I read the headline of your discussion, I could not believe my eyes. I mean such things happen in India with chilling regularity but Britain!!! It never crossed my mind that the couple in question could very well have been of Indian origin. Well old habits do die hard and I do think the couple in question are a bit of nutcase too. Becoming a parent post 50 should itself be considered a miracle and a special gift from GOD and here they are misusing this wonderful opportunity provided to them by science. I think they should be hunted down from wherever they are into hiding till things cool off and should be made accountable in some way for these two lovely babies. I mean you cant just go on producing girls like some factory production in the hope for boys and keep on abandoning them for society to take care of, until and unless the fancied heir decides to turn up. And I would also like the Indian embassy in Britain to stop issuing further visas to these deranged types so that they cant go off to India again and conceive and then come back to Britain to dump their unwanted daughters. What a shame they have brought to us Indians!

The more this is talked about, the more justice is likely to shine on the shade. * This pair ticked off quite a few, judging from the comments on the article page and the comments on the MyLot page. Sadly, I'm sure they aren't alone in their disregard of life. * The more this issue is discussed, the more girls are saved in many nations.

That is a horrible thing to do. I wouldn't abandon any of my kids even if my husband didn't want a girl or a boy..Geez, this people have no conscience at all.

And when the parent has no conscience, it is up to the community to have a conscience.

It is really very sad that newborn were girls so they were abandoned by their parents. I feel the mentality of certain people has not changed. They prefer boys over girls. Not knowing the fact that the ratio of girls (atleast in India) is going down day by day in comparison to boys. If the ratio tilts towards a particular gender, boys won't find girls to marry and the whole system of a society will collapse. Girls child is very essential to sustain the balance in our society and those who think otherwise, are not well-wisher of a society. There is need to go for a vigrous campaign about the importance of a girl child and each one of us, should be part of the campaign. Good Post!

What is ironic is that in a knowledge economy is that girls and boys can compete equally. The superior upper body strength of the male does not give him an edge. It is what is folded neatly between the ears and how that is nurtured that gives the child an edge.

Wow, that is really awful! I just don't see how someone can carry a child inside them for 9 months and then not want it when it is born just because it is the wrong gender! That is just cruel and mean.

I know some third world countries do value male children over female children but it still comes as a shock. This couple is now British. Are there no laws about abandonment over there. At least sign the papers to give them up for adoption. As for a second time around, if I were the doctor I would really have to think on this one.

The Hospital's first priority was to the two tiny twin patients and their welfare. The Doctor didn't want Mum or Dad to dump them in a bin somewhere because they felt threatened. * I'm American, but I'm sure there's laws about abandonment. Remember that cute "contact us" on the end of that article? That lets you know that the UK's camera network's eyes are open for those shoddy parents. Now that the law doesn't need to concern themselves about the immediate welfare of the babies tucked safely away, the gloves come off.

The law is looking for these people. In the UK your not allowed to abandon a cat. The little ones are in good hands.

I know I'm going to get flamed for this, but oh well. If they had to have in vitro to begin with, they should be happy with anything they receive. In Indian culture twins are highly regarded, regardless of gender. Somehow I can't help but think there was a reason for her being barren. I know that's not the case, but if you are unwilling to take care of YOUR child because it's not the gender you wanted, you aren't mature to have kids in the first place. I hope the doctor they go to next tells them they they are no longer capable of being parents.

I wish there was a way to keep updated on this case, but I don't think that further attempts at parenthood are in these people's future. They dumped children in a hospital for pity's sake. I don't know a lot about UK law, but I don't think that is something that isn't frowned upon. These are two tiny human beings.
