Discrimination in all of us

I trully belive that we all have it in us. Now dont get me wrong I dont mean in a big way but we all do things that could be said are discriminating against others. eg. when men drive (many) complain about women drivers based on gender, or everyone has an issue with older drivers. When you think about it many of us do it without thinking about it. Do you agree?

Yes. We ALL make assumptions and pre-judgements about many different things. It is a "survival mechanism" we all possess. It is not necessarily a BAD thing... only until the time when we assign a VALUE judgement to the distinctions. It's one thing to say that there are physical differences between the races; there is no value judgement in that. But when we say that one race is BETTER than another due to their physical differences, THEN it is NOT a good thing. But if I hear a loud "BANG" noise, I might first DUCK or be alerted or scared, because my survival instincts tell me that it might pose a threat. But if it's the 4th of July, and my neighbors are "celebrating," well... that "bang" has a whole different meaning.

I think you have discrimination mixed up with stereotypes and racism. Discrimination is an act that excludes a specific subject, race, species, object, or gender, for no good reason. Stereotypes are assumptions about a specific subject. For example, you can stereotype women as bad drivers, but that isn't discrimination. Read only if you need to waste time: I don't think I discriminate against anything, but I do stereotype a lot of stuff, and I experience racism every single day. I'm a white guy, as white as they come, and it seems like blacks (or browns as I like to call them) target whites to insult and gang up on. I'm a friendly soul, but almost every single 'black' person I ever met wanted to beat me up or begged me for money. I'm not racist, because I'm not assuming every black person is like that, however, I have some experience that statistically shows me otherwise. I try to stay around old people rather than anyone else, because they tend to be less violent.

as long as i know and depend on what i read, there is actually the differrence between men and women. in your example in here about driving, there are lots of articles said that women's driving and parking aren't good as men's driving and parking. its also happened with reading a map which shows that men is better in reading map than women. either we like or not there is kind difference between us and men and its not about discrimination matter cause its more from their natural basic skill since they divided into woman and man

I do agree with you in a general sense. Here in the Philippines, they always qualm about discriminated by other race, yet they don't realize they're also discriminating their own race. I love my country, and I am proud to be from the Philippines, but honestly, yes, at one point in time, we tend to discriminate other people, too -- maybe not verbally speaking, but just by thinking, sometimes it happens.

I think we would not be human if we didn't have prejudices of certain sorts. Despite all this talk about "non discrimination" most of us are products of our up bringing and cultural conditioning often has this way of teaching us not to trust what can be politely called "The Other" - namely everyone else who isn't what you are. It's like human beings will always find something to dislike about each other - if it's not race, it will be religion (of which even people in the same religion will argue about), gender, weight, height etc etc. Having said that, I think most of us are capable to looking beyond our cultural instincts and prejudices and to look at human beings for what they actually are.

Of course we are--in different levels and different subjects. We are constantly emerging from our history. Look what Hollywood did to saturate the TV viewers with images they created. June Cleaver with her perfect hair and pearl necklace, old men vs. women bantering from old vaudeville and Hollywood, they continue today and given the audience and subject....everyone says....not me. We deny individually so as a whole we are guilty for letting it slide. The biggest blatant marketing discrimination is Native Americans. We can buy a Jeep Cherokee but not a Nissan Negro, Pontiac Jew or Chrystler Christian. We have sport teams like the Redskins which somes from the history of hunting Indians for their hides and the payment was by the skins of Indians. The mascot exists of a smiling toothy Indian but if it were a black face or mexican face the press and national groups would be all over the icon in a heartbeat. We are all guilty of tolerance.....that's when we agree. Sometimes we are guilty just by ignorance.....read your histories.....remember where you came from.

Yeah that is unfortunately very true, even in the family, some siblings are treated differently, in politics, jobs are dished according to part support and for the case of african countries, according to ethnicity, your are very right!

we have a very smart prime minister right now. He discriminates in such way it is true politics. And he does it in positive way. He targets specific groups of people and gives them what they never had and after few years we can hardly blame him because he did something for everyone. but people only think discrimination is bad things but when you single out a specific group of people then how can not be discrimination. Maybe they are not but the rest of us are. Do you know what I am saying?

I totally agree that everyone to some extent is discriminatory towards people. I myself am discrimatory to people where I live that can't or won't speak english. I feel that if you are going to be in a country that the language is english then you need to speak the language, not expect everyone else to learn yours. I also don't like older drivers because in MY experience they are dangerous on the road. Not all of them are like that but some are. Just my 2 cents worth.
