A bit of everything...

Your at a party, meeting new people, and naturally you discuss interests and hobbies, but why, when it comes to music do i have to be classified as "rocky" or just like "pop". Is "I like a bit of everything" not a valid response? It is so hard to clasify what someone likes in 2 or 3 words, but its not the time to go into it too deeply, what do people suggest? Bore them sensless with a discussion of personal tastes, or submit to a simple clasification for a quiet life?
