Is spanking children legal in your country?

I've noticed a lot of discipline discussions here, where it seems like the majority of respondents recommend physical punishment. Is it widely accepted where you live?

It is done here in the US, I personally do it. Just the other day my son got way out of line in a store, I got on to him a few times, pulled him aside and talked to him, and when it continued, I took him to the parking lot and busted him. I get tired of people calling it child abuse, I am not using a belt or any other object, just my hand, and I am not hitting that hard, just hard enough to get his attention and make him think twice before he does it again. Most of the time he doesn't even cry. In the south a lot of people do it, you get a lot of christians down here and they live by the book, myself included. Spare the rod spoil the child. I don't get many people giving me funny looks or commenting on me spanking my child, they understand how to parent the child, that it takes discipline and it isn't always easy or fun. That is what it is about, you are molding this person for the future, and it is a job. Granted, it is fun most of the time, but there are some parts that just suck, that's one of them.

It's definitely legal in the U.S. But I think a lot of people who recommend it don't understand the psychological implications it has for the child. It can really be damaging during those particularly formative years. I think every parent and parent to-be should take a child psychology and development college course so they can really understand just how much their actions will end up affecting their child, negatively or positively.

When I keep my nephews and nicecs, their parents ask me to spank the children if they dont listen. They use the belts at their home. Lot of people dont like to spank their children but sometimes, they do need to spank the children.

In my country there is no particular law for spanking children....however if physical punishment goes upto a level where the child is brutally harmed then ofcourse a legal action takes place but not in the normal case...

I'm from the U.S and I guess you could say that physical punishment here is frowned upon. I lived in a very diverse part of NY and I guess your parents' nationality/background determines whether or not spanking is okay. My parents think it is okay and I have the memories to prove it.
