Don't you miss the good old internet times?

Hi guys! Those of you who remember. It was around 1996, I started to get acquainted with the internet. Usual speeds here in Manila are 33.6kbps (not sure in other countries). Back then, a 2MB file would really make you worry as it takes a couple of minutes to download. Web pages were simple. Just a few simple pictures, some moving :D, and very few clutters. Another important thing to note would be online communities. May it be chat, an online game, or instant messaging, people seems to be trying to be cautious and just being honest. No offense to anyone. Nowadays, it's different. More people are pretending to be someone else. Before around 80% (just my estimate based on experience) are honest about their gender. But now, around 60-65%. I guess more people tend to grasp the notion of anonymity on the net. Web pages that contain useless information are increasing. Less people are respectful (again, based on experience) and honest. Do you feel the same way or experience it the same way? Share your thoughts here.

I also remember when I bought my first computer with an external dial-up modem! It was supposed to be 56 kbps, but most of the time it was like 20 and it depended on the phone line! Now I sit on 24 Mbps and I get stressed whenever I have to go to my sisters, she has "only" got 2 Mbps! About the anonymity, I am certain you are right. In the beginning people saw the internet as a giant ocean of information, noone really "thought about" the worse sides of it. The more it started to develop the more people took advantage of it. I do think that people used to do that already from the beginning, the "bad guys" are always a step ahead. But I think that not only the bad guys but more "normal" people have realized the benefits of staying anonymous and therefore now use the internet in a way which they would never do if they had to put in their personal details.

Very well said! It may sound a little something like, "Hey, they are doing it, I can as well. I can hide/pretend about something". Even if that person has pictures, you're still unsure right? (PS: I'm a man )

Well, it's the same for everyone, a picture can be a picture of anyone, anywhere! You can read the newspaper any day to realize that this anonymity issue with the internet are causing problems and victims everywhere! Of course it is sad when young girls are being raped and even killed by "guys" they have met online, but people really have to stop being so naive and gullible - learn more and teach it to the kids!

Yeah. It really feels sad that unlike before, when you're chatting with a girl, you really ARE chatting with a girl. Now, you don't even know first hand. You have to investigate most of the time.

5 kbps?? Indeed, that's real slow. Even text-based emails would take a while. That's really cool, 8 mbps at $4?? That's an excellent deal. I have 1.5mbps at $25... It's the cheapest here. (sigh) It's stable alright but still isn't that fast enough for me.
